When a car driver kills a bicycle rider in a crash we install a to commemorate the victim.

Is there an equivalent for pedestrians who lose their lives in traffic?

Help, ?

@CelloMomOnCars
I know of regular demonstrations shortly after a pedestrian died in traffic at least in . Here's Twitter post by one of the groups involved: https://nitter.privacydev.net/fussverkehr_de/status/1752686785593778633
Instead of a they place a white cut-out of a person where the accident happened. Wasn't able to find any hashtags for the demonstrations though, sorry.

Thank you, this is very interesting.
I wonder how long the white figures stayed up: ideally you'd like them to be there for years - until they need repainting, or until the street gets redesigned.

@CelloMomOnCars
Iirc figures remain there for about a year because of some law.

@dawning_sun

The law that says ""For gods sake let us not remind people of how dangerous our streets are by showing the cumulative toll."

@CelloMomOnCars @dawning_sun an intersection with several white memorial figures certainly should provoke some discussion. Make the invisible visible.

@deborahh

It's embarrassing to city governments and puts them in the for-them difficult position between those who want everyone to arrive safely and the still-powerful car-brained people who tolerate not the slightest reduction of what they think of as their rights on the street.

(But I'm not cynical about the process at all, oh no).

@dawning_sun @CelloMomOnCars I like that. A cross is also used for car-on-car fatalities, I believe. The human figure makes it clearer.

anubis2814,

@CelloMomOnCars I don't know what a ghost bike is, but usually there is a cross with flowers around it at the spot when anyone dies in a traffic accident..

blitzen,

@anubis2814 @CelloMomOnCars I think stenciling white footprints on the asphalt would be an effective means of reminding drivers (and pedestrians) of the danger.

@blitzen @anubis2814

They're bikes painted white and placed at the location of a fatal car-on-bike crash.

They stand up and are easy to spot. A cross would be easy to see likewise.

In Greece they have these roadside mini-shrines, but they tend to be in the shape of a Greek church. I'm looking for something more universal.

This article calls them DIY traffic calming signage.
