I would like to stick a coating onto my home office window to reflect infra-red radiation with minimal reduction of visible spectrum light. Does anyone know much about this?

Random internet searches mostly return results for mirror coatings, or broad-spectrum tints. Not quite what I'm after.

@tj 3m made exactly what you want and we had it installed on our sunroom.

They don’t make it any more :(

@anathema_device Bummer! Do you know what product it was as a starting point for further investigation? Maybe someone else picked up the torch.

@tj have you considered venetian blinds? they're good for finessing sun/heat ingress without permanently cutting out the light

@anathema_device I've currently got wooden slat louvers in front of the window:

You can see they get quite warm where the AC isn't blowing directly onto them. From this perspective the louvers entirely block line of sight to outside.

I'm also getting a lot of heat through the walls and ceiling. A mate is giving me some leftover insulation for the ceiling. Not much I can do about the walls, though. Lord I hate plastering.

@tj We got blow-in insulation for our brick veneer walls - made an enormous difference! You can hang outdoor blinds on the outside of those walls from the eaves to cut down direct sun on them, and you can hang thermal lined curtains on the inside. There is no rule that curtains have to be only over windows.

Brickbats are cheap as chips and you can easily put those in the ceiling yourself.

@tj 3M Thinsulate 75 Climate Control Glazing Film

This kind of thing is big in Europe but not so much here.

However you might consider getting that window reglazed with climate control/thermal transfer glass, or similar

@anathema_device @tj We have the same. I didn't realise they stopped it. We have a cracked window I won't be so quick to replace now I know that

We did it as a compromise when doubleglazing quotes came back too wild. I expect DG is still superior especially northfacing windows where direct sunlight hits the glass

anathema_device,

@strykeroz @tj We have secondary glazing on our north facing windows, and the amount of heat that comes in, is incredible. Curtains and Venetians blinds make a huge difference though

@tj @anathema_device They still have a similar product but needs installation - wonder if there's something potentially toxic in the unapplied material? Or maybe just got tired of complaints about misapplied film. Or decided it was more profitable not selling it retail. https://www.3m.com.au/3M/en_AU/p/d/b00016645/

anathema_device,
@anathema_device@bne.social avatar

@lyndaljane @tj We enquired about those - the least light diminishing of them still cuts out 30% of visible light. The old version is invisible

tj,
@tj@howse.social avatar

@lyndaljane @anathema_device Thanks! I think you're probably on the money about why they don't sell it direct to consumers anymore. A pity.

@tj @lyndaljane There are DIY solar films at Bunnings but they’re fairly shit
