Had to share with this community, I decided for my second game to just rip off the band-aid and I entered a game jam targeted at beginners. I placed 3rd - with 1st and 2nd going to more seasoned game developers. I never imagined that, going in, I would be on the pedestal. I just have to thank everyone that participates in game...
(I am an author of this game. I am not a shill, game is 100% free, there is no premium content, full game is avalaible without paying - this is work of passion and feedback is my main motivation)....
Many games support both keyboard/mouse and controller input. Many users (myself included) may wish to switch their input method mid-game, but what is the best way of handling this?...
I was wondering if there were some good resources for the concepts of a FPS inventory. My current idea to to just have a JSON file with every item having a “name” “type” “weight” and “count” propertys. I was thinking this would have the added benefit of using a single list that can be used for multiple menus(ie:...
I have finally finished made my website. Its not perfect but its decent at best to get my devlogs out there. So for the mean time i will be posting there instead of lemmy unless its for stuff like getting people to try out builds n such. But ill be posting links to my website when a new one comes. Looking for good resources on scanning mostly flat textures. Tried to use a photograph of a tatami mat and had a lot of problems with the lens distortion. I don’t own any professional photo equipment so I have to use my Pixel 6 camera. I have a couple of Ideas but I’m not really sure how to tackle the problem. Using a 3d...
Hi all! Posting from my alt account on lemmy.blahaj.zone because it’s been brought to my attention that we have users here from Beehaw and of course they can’t see anything I’m posting with my main account @TeaHands....
Hey, everyone! So, I’m new here and I’ve been checking out all the super helpful posts in this group. After reading about it being beginner-friendly (totally makes sense with that name, right?), I decided to join the My First Game Jam!...
Since Lemmy is a terrible influence, I’ve been convinced to give RSS another go as a means to get at the news that interests me interesting stuff that I’d otherwise miss. It’s actually working surprisingly well, so I thought I’d share some gamedev-specific resources that I’ve subscribed to so far....
Oh hi. I’m not a mod or anything but felt the urge to try and post a daily chat thread. Game development can sometimes be a battle behind the scenes. I’ve been banging my head against a bug with a 3rd party library all week. Sometimes you need a fresh approach and today I came at it again from another angle. Turns out a DLL...
TL;DR New moderator, so please do report any problematic posts or comments. What sort of content would you like to see here? Post-mortems? AMAs? And a reminder that we allow self-promo here but only if it adds value from a gamedev perspective....
When this community was brand new I got to talking with a few people who fancy the idea of taking part in a game jam, but are too nervous. Whether because they’d never done one before, or at least not in a while, or just a general lack of confidence in their ability to “keep up” with more experienced devs....
Narrative scripting languages like Yarn Spinner or Inkle were originally meant for writing dialogue, but I think they can also be used for scripting the world progression even when no dialogue or even narration is involved....
I have plans for making video game, and so far Godot looks most promising out of free game engines (completely free and open source, native script language - GDscript - similar to Python which I know and from yt tutorials it seems very intuitive). Any couterarguments?
I didn't see IndieDev, which is a community I frequented a lot on reddit. Between this one and IndieDev, that's where I spent most of my time. I'm honestly not even sure what the distinction between the two is anymore.
I’m developing my own game from scratch, and up until now I’ve been using json (nlohmann) for de-/serialization. My game generates a lot of objects procedurally (think of it as Minecraft in size) and objects load/unload pretty slow and occupies a lot of disc space. I’ve seen lots of people recommend creating your custom...
I’m working on a game right now and I’ve added some post processing and I’m loving how it looks, but I’m realizing I don’t know anything about it. What does your post processing stack look like? How does it fit into your game’s overall art style? Would love some resources on post processing if anyone has them!
