A little in a struggle currently....
I want to also setup a Hypervisor for my
Got a here with a i7 6700 and 32GB of RAM (Micro form factor).

Maybe I'm overthinking here a lot... but I try to hold down the electricity cost as much as possible.

At the moment the is at roughly ~35W

Would you guys/gals add a machine or would you rather not?
Any feedback is welcome 🙂

@jhx

You can get Intel N100 based mini PC.

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/231803/intel-processor-n100-6m-cache-up-to-3-40-ghz.html

The Intel page says 16 GB RAM max but if You check Reddit and other forums the 32 GB RAM works just fine.

N100 has like 10 times smaller TDP then You current CPU (65W vs 6W) - so that should save You a lot RAM when your PCs will be in loaded state.

AMD Ryzen and AMD Embedded Ryzen CPU are also in similar TDP with 4-8 cores and even better RAM support - both in multichannel and ECC if you need it.

Hope that helps.

@vermaden
Thanks for the link 😉
The more I can save, the better 😎
Always interesting to see some low powered solutions!

Thanks for your suggestions - made a decision 😎

@jhx "At the moment the homelab is at roughly ~35W" is pretty low draw already. A server pulling 50W 24/7 365 @ 13¢ kWh runs about $56 year.
Arguably adding a few VMs or containers probably wont add a ton of draw.
I like to add power monitoring smart plugs in-line so I can draw a pretty nice power graph with Home Assistant.

@noflcl
I go for it 😉
Will use a 6500T that I have laying around with Proxmox - so the costs are not much higher.

Btw: Here, the kWh price is at 0,40 Euro.... Germany... pretty expensive.

noflcl,
@noflcl@mastodon.social avatar

@jhx So it is literally cheaper run a VPS homelab than an in house homelab haha. That price is out of control!

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@noflcl
Yeah, the prices here are brutal... know people that pay even more.

noflcl,
@noflcl@mastodon.social avatar

@jhx 😮 Power generation would become number one on my list 😅

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@noflcl
aaand that is quite expensive to 😂

Personally, I hope for lower prices in the future.
Anyone and there grandma has a computer nowadays - and people also run servers (Small or big).

Well, I still have hope 😀

@jhx Depends what setup you have currently.
If you use „standard” OS, you can try changing it to Proxmox for example.
In this way you still have one machine and low power usage and can run VMs.

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@systemz
I would use on it 😉
Forgot to mention that.

systemz,
@systemz@systemz.pl avatar

@jhx Sure. Do you have list of services and approximate resources that you use?
If you don’t, it’s good moment to make one 😛
I would suggest some solutions but I would need to know what you have currently - documentation is really useful!

For charts what is connected to what, I can suggest Mermaid and it’s online editor

@systemz
Thanks for the link! Did not know about mermaid before 😉

The plan is running 2 - 3 vm's currently... although this is not set in stone. (But 2 would be for production use)

I need to write down my ideas and actually make a useful plan to go by.

For now I will use another OptiPlex I have here with Proxmox (A 6500T with 16GB, which is plenty)
The i7 one will become my desktop 😉
This gives me some leverage and also saves costs.

systemz,
@systemz@systemz.pl avatar

@jhx Great! Usually better is to write what you currently have and what you want to accomplish (current problems and how you want to solve them).
Then executing plan is usually fast and easy👌😎

This reminds me, I should also update my docs and share on website.
Maybe it will inspire others and also maybe someone will be able to suggest me better solutions than I have now 🤔
I use but want to migrate to and gain easier VM managment and bitrot protection.

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@systemz
That would be for sure intersting to read 😉
Always like seeing other setups and getting inspired from them!

Right, I should indeed also document this
Well, something to do for myself I would say 😀
