Here's a close up of some perforated foliage

It's about 4ft or a little taller at this point, and has been a bit of a pain in the ass keeping up right. This cool spiral support has been serving pretty well, but has needed a few readjustments as it grows. We keep it out on the north-facing front porch where it's well shaded all day long with the help of big front yard tree.

senecio stapeliiformis aka a pickle plant

TooTallSol,

Thanks!

Looks like propagation is through root cuttings or seeds. Which these pieces are neither.

At least I still have a chunk of the plant with roots. Just not enough to propagate.

Rainbright, in This is one of the first succulents I started from a cutting. It seems to have taken off!

I love it. I’ll often rescue broken off succulent leaves from the floor of Lowes or Home Depot and propagate free plants.

That’s one of my favorite things too! I have a couple of those I’ll share later on.

thegreyreyal,

One of my bad habits is “prop-lifting” from Home Depot.

Rainbright,

I’ve been thinking about starting a Proplifting magazine here.

Good idea! Go for it. If you want mod help I’ll try. No experience though.

What a lovely little Buddha of a plant. I hope it continues to do well in it's fancy elephant container

Cat, in I've managed to kill about 85% of the cacti and succulents I got a couple of years ago, yet somehow this one continues to thrive. It arrived to me with a flower, and this is now its third year blooming! 😁🤯
Cat avatar

Congrats on the bloom. The best way I've heard it said is that thoy thrive on neglect. Forget to water them for a week or two, good. Don't water them until the soil has completely dried out.

Thanks!
That advice is definitely valid for a lot of these plants, but it also killed a few of mine 😂 I've had to learn to read the signs for each of my surviving plants lol

LetterboxPancake, in Its gonna be ok, she's going to make it. We've started an IV.

I like the idea. Is this a joke or a product? 😅

Its just a drip feed water system off amazon, you can get them for bottles too. And different feed rates

LetterboxPancake,

I need to check. I’m a certified plant suffering specialist 😞

I really like the support you’ve got wrapped around the plant. Did you buy it that way or add it yourself?

H_Interlinked,

Added it as it was growing up. We had a simple post support before, then tried a different spiral support but it was weak. This thing is sturdy and getting the job done. It really takes two hands to effectively manipulate it, so it helped to have my wife holding the plant upright.

_haha_oh_wow_, in I always wanted to have a Monstera. Grew it from a little crop. Proud of my baby!

You've created a monster...

...a.

zoobiedoobie, in Can anyone recommend any good materials for beginners please? Books, videos, wikis... anything. I really want to learn the basics!

I would recommend starting with a Golden Pothos plant. It’s really resilient and rewarding. Grows at a decent pace so you won’t get bored waiting for it to put out new growth. Stick your finger in the soil and if it feels dry water it. Good luck and I think Summer Rayne Oakes and Epic Gardening on youtube have good videos on plant care.

That’s such a cool idea. I’ve put mine in a latte cup.

zoobiedoobie, in My collection so far

Haha. Everyone has that one plant that wants to keep dying no matter what you do. Also love your plant collection. I think everyone on here should do a group photo of all their plants.

Family photos, i have one good window and one spare light this is where i gather all the house plants. I am still sad i have to leave behind my old collection when i moved across the country in winter. My pitcher plant is one i loved the most.

zoobiedoobie,

Ooh! Pitcher plants are super cool. It sucks that you will have to leave your plants behind but check the import laws in the new country before you travel. You can take small cuttings of your favourite plants and take them on the plane with you. That way you will have something you can begin with.

Adult Me 1 month later: I should really clear out that dead basil plant.

UnhappyCamper, in Simpler things in life
UnhappyCamper avatar

I keep trying to grow basil but the damn things always etoliate into the clouds, even with the most sun I can give them and trying to keep them cut back. It drives me nuts.

At least it's the easiest plant ever to propagate so I can continue my failing journey over and over.

Some thoughts:

  • I’ve never called the mimicry plant anything other than a “butt plant”
  • I have terrible luck with the waxed plants. I’ve tried with 3 and all 3 have died. But they look lovely!
ickplant,
@ickplant@lemmy.world avatar

My son used to call it “the butt plant!” I thought it was just him being unique. I can never keep a string of pearls alive, but I have several thriving ZZ plants. Un-killable.
