Do your part, try not to lurk!

Right now the user count Lemmys is comparatively tiny when held up against reddit - but the user count isn't the thing that makes a social media site, it's the engagement

So even if you're used to lurking, try to get a little more active! Post memes, vote on posts, talk in the comments, whatever!

If people come here and see activity, content, and discussions, they're more likely to stay and contribute their own - if they come and see a ghost town, they'll just go back to reddit

Holy smokes 84 comments? You must have commenting superpowers or something

bdonvr,

135 by my count. (Just means I've been commenting in communities that your instance hasn't discovered yet)

Edit: instance, not insurance lmao

baronvonj,
@baronvonj@lemmy.ml avatar

I thought Rogers was strictly Canadian, but you moderate Houston Texans community?

bdonvr,

Lol, it had nothing to do with Rogers the telecom company. That's just the URL I happened to own for personal reasons.

pancake,
@pancake@lemmy.ml avatar

Holy shit that's amazing! I really need to step up my game.

bdonvr,

My screentime for reddit was like, 30 hours a week before this week.

I probably should've quit link aggregation sites altogether. Would've been more healthy. It's like a part time job lmao.

pancake,
@pancake@lemmy.ml avatar

They've truly fucked up by messing with the few users like you that basically hold the site together. Welcome, and remember to spend time doing healthy activities, will you? ;)

bdonvr,

remembers my actual job being a truck driver working 6 days a week

yeah... healthy. yup.

Hahaha nice, made me exhale

I mean idk how long youve done it for but if it hasnt killed you then it cant be that bad for you.

bdonvr,

I'm in my 20's, there's plenty of time lol. Just a lot of sitting. And way too many hours working a week, plus an ever changing schedule resulting in terrible sleep.

mbp,

And admittedly this is a nice passive way to decompress after a work day

roi,

I don’t use Screen Time for this exact reason. I don’t wanna know how much I used Reddit, and I don’t wanna know how much time I’ll spend on Lemmy.

lixus98,

Wow. You just made me check and I was on reddit for 14 hours a week. Hopefully the fediverse won't be as addictive (so far is not looking good)

IverCoder,

Goodbye, Reddit addiction!

Hello, Lemmy addiction.

Here before low-effort Reddit content floods the Fediverse. 🍻

At this rate I'll take you over soon!

Scavenger_Solardaddy,

Big time introverted lurker on reddit, since here is a much smaller community, I don't feel so intimidated. I'll try to be more active here. Let's do this guys, let's create a great place for all the Reddit Refugees. FUCK u/Spez!

lee,

Yes!!!

bitsplease,

FUCK u/Spez!

Hey now, /u/spez is a hero - without him, Lemmy would never have taken off like it has lol

golden_zealot,
@golden_zealot@lemmy.ml avatar

Definitely. Everyone on Lemmy at this time seems very reasonable as well and I am finding that the discussion is typically of a much higher quality than on Reddit, so for those who don't usually engage, try it, it's definitely worth a shot here.

bluuit,

i made an instance but using it is still kind of overwhelming tbh, but im excited to see where it goes so i can ditch reddit

beto,
@beto@lemmy.studio avatar

Good luck with your instance!

roi,

Reddit conversations have always been either “Google en passant” or something worthwhile, or the third one where it’s just an agreement. Can’t say I am not guilty of doing all of them.

FiskFisk33,

Holy Conversation!

roi,

New way to communicate just dropped

Skullfurious,
its4am,

I like your puppy.

Senseibull,

Me too!

SQL_InjectMe,

that’s not a puppy, he’s too big

mattc,

I don’t often have anything to add, but here is my buddy.

Unlikelyvillain,
jatt,

Made an account 22 hours ago, been lurking around here and there, finally decided to post my first comment after reading this post. I'd like to get more involved, just trying to find my footing first. Speaking of - what app(s) is everyone using? I'm on Android, and just logged into Jerboa. Decent UI, not a fan of the flashing screen during transitions. Any recommendations on other apps? Thanks.

Lemmington,

The mobile web UI is very nice, the native dark mode in samsung internet looks great on here too. Feels almost like a native app.

spicyjimmy87762,

I’m also using the mobile site and it’s been pretty good so far. More than enough to browse around and interact.

Moonguide,

On Jerboa as well. Had downloaded lemmur before but that app seems dead. Have you set your phone on dark mode? I don't have those same issues you're having regarding transitions.

amir_s89,
@amir_s89@lemmy.ml avatar

The Jerboa app seams to be in active developement. So i am optimistic for various improvements shall arrive in the future. You can observe it on their GitHub page.

Badger,
@Badger@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Hey now, I lurked on Reddit for years and it grew to be a huge success. I'm ready to repeat this bold strategy!

gmatkins,

Same.

BarneyKB,

This is kinda exciting ngl

mgjade,

Definitely agree, it feels like the start of something really really promising.

positiveWHAT, (edited )

It's like a new chapter of internet history! Maybe. Seeing Reddit getting dark was chilling. Edit: Wait, some subreddits did go dark already, right? Or am I just feeling the pressing atmosphere?

SpookyBogMonster,
@SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, a slow trickle of subreddits have already gone dark in response to the announcement of all the 3rd party apps shutting down at the end of the month. And I imagine today's AMA fiasco has only accelerated that

roi,

Oh yeah. Many have already gone dark. The real D-Day is the 12th.

Geometric7792,

I really, really hope the open internet takes off again

ablackcatstail,

@BarneyKB @bitsplease It's very exciting!!! I'm just going to hold off a little bit until it gets to the early beta stage before standing up my own instance. That much said, I'm enthusiastically cheering the devs on. Lemmy has good bones and a good plan of attack. I expect it only to improve.

nathanpc,
@nathanpc@lemmy.ml avatar

I won't lie, if you look at my Reddit profile you'll see that I've commented more here in the last couple of days than probably the last 3 years on Reddit. The community just feels more welcome and I feel as if my comment will get read instead of being drowned out as it happens on Reddit.

Dougie,

Yep, this is how i felt as well!

Debs,

Same. Always kinda talked myself out of commenting on reddit because my comments would never be engaged with. Felt like I missed the boat there. Time to start over and build a new community.

Manticore,
@Manticore@beehaw.org avatar

Either it doesn't get engaged with, or the people who engage with it have the reading comprehension of a carrot.

I noticed you didn't explicitly say in your post that you don't kick puppies, so let me assume that you believe that is acceptable and then vividly describe what a horrible person you are. Also,

Time to start over

...now that I've pulled a tiny portion of comment out of context to make it easier to attack, how dare you.

HarvesterOfEyes,
@HarvesterOfEyes@lemmy.ml avatar

Yep, felt the same way on reddit. Sometimes, I started writing a comment but then halfway through I thought to myself "can I really muster the energy to engage with people who just skim through it or aggressively pick it apart and write an essay on how right they are with sources either taken out of their ass or taken out of context just to suit their viewpoints?". So I just ended up deleting it and go back to lurking.

alpaca128,

Yes, communities where people discuss in good faith are so much more pleasant.

longshaden,

hol' up, comparing their reading comprehension to that of a carrot is an unfair insult to the average carrot.

and how exactly is the comparison? is it one carrot per person, or can a single carrot out-comprehend the whole lot?

its4am,

My comment would either get overlooked or it was literally walking on eggshells. Make an innocuous remark that somehow gets taken out of context and say hello to the downvotes.

tyler,

Usually with Reddit you gotta be there early in a post to get interacted with. If it’s 5-6 hours since the post was made you’re only likely to get a few scattered upvotes.

mobiuscoffee,
@mobiuscoffee@sh.itjust.works avatar

It felt a bit off at first to not have the top comments all be the ones with the most votes, but I like how it works on lemmy after spending time here.

You can join an old thread and not feel like it's pointless to add to the discussion!

BigP,

As a recent Reddit refugee, I really hope federated social media sites like Lemmy and Mastodon take off!

jamesj999,

Agreed!

Plasma, (edited )
@Plasma@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh I really hope so as well!

fuser,

Lemmy is a very promising foundation - I think more accessible than Mastodon, which also has a great community but the way posts are organized in Lemmy seems more intuitive - although the process to add a community in Lemmy (searching the URL) is kinda clunky and the UI has some issues, we can knock the burrs of the software easily enough -- but just based on seeing the uptake from Reddit, the basic idea of Lemmy seems like it could be the home run in terms of getting people (at least the smart ones) out of corporate-run social media sites. This is very different to the twitter -> Mastodon migration which was pretty chaotic - Lemmy seems (somewhat ironically) well-organized in comparison.

NataliePortland,
@NataliePortland@lemmy.ca avatar
a1studmuffin,

Cool, I didn’t know we could embed images in posts and they’d show up inline. I wonder how long that will last, haha.

roi,

good to know!

imkmiaw,

Trying my best here, I'm introverted to an extreme, but I really dislike the direction in which Reddit is going and will go, and wish for this place (or rather, places), to prosper and see how it evolves.

solidstate,

I feel reminded of the old days of the internet. It is invigorating discovering this Fediverse. Everything feels a lot more engaged than Reddit. I think it may be a good thing if this does not "take off" completely.

Ultra980,

I'm Gen Z and never got to experience the old internet, but I have seen old posts on stuff like Google Groups and mail lists. The fediverse has a similar vibe, and I like it

its4am,

I first got online back in 1995 via dial up. My ISP charged by the minute and using the internet meant hogging the phone line, which my parents weren't too happy with. So how ever long I managed to use the internet back then felt like a privilege.

alphapro784,
@alphapro784@lemmy.ml avatar

Reddit refugee here! Hope to see Lemmy, Mastodon and the Fediverse become super popular down the line!

DawnOfRiku,

Honestly, I feel more comfortable participating on Lemmy than I ever did on Reddit or Twitter.

mattchu_c,

I agree. This place appears to be more inviting and friendly. I'm not worried that I'm going to make a spelling mistake and never hear the end of it

sparklingsquirrel,
@sparklingsquirrel@feddit.de avatar

I feel you. On Reddit I was always afraid to get 1000 of comments telling me I'm stupid or how could I do xyz. I really like it here on Lemmy, everyone is just so welcoming and not at all mad that so many of us (former) Redditors are joining.

fuser,

Reddit's main attraction for me was RPAN, which of course they ditched. I hope to see a day when musicians can play live on the fediverse. I don't know how, but it sure would be cool.

engto,

Hello everyone. This is literally the first thing I'm clicking on after registering

jamesj999,
