Some good news: Google Chrome (and Chromium) will soon /properly/ support dark mode on Linux https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2023/04/google-chrome-114-will-respect-dark-mode-on-linux

post,

@omgubuntu

Does someone know if it still needs to restart to apply the change? If yes will it works with Electron apps once updated too?

At the moment some Electron apps respect the setting but need to be restarted to apply a light/dark switch.

tunix,

@omgubuntu window chrome totally matches? how? I never saw any Chrome based browser automatically switched to dark mode before. I'm talking about the browser controls, URL bar, menus etc. Not the actual web page?

How does that match automatically?

@tunix In the post you can see the window chrome following dark mode preference on my Ubuntu system. It's done that for a while for me.

tunix,

@omgubuntu What do you see here on your side? Do you see a setting that reflects "follow system theme" ?

@omgubuntu No news concerning anything related to Google is good unless it is some failure.

With Vivaldi, I always modified the flags in the desktop entry.
The following is added:
"--enable-features=WebUIDarkMode --force-dark-mode"
This will automatically toggle the site's dark mode if it has one. If not, then I'll go blind anyway ;-;

distantsynths,

@omgubuntu A long time coming but glad it's finally happening! Back when I used Chrome full time, I had to use a small bash script to create a .desktop shortcut that forced Chrome into dark mode on startup, really tedious for no good reason on Google's part.

@omgubuntu Finally!

@omgubuntu It’s quite curious Chrome was the last major browser to support this, yay standards or something

@xerz I don't use dark mode that often so only noticed Chrome didn't fully support it recently, when adding dark mode support to omg. Quite baffling – but glad it's getting fixed.
