Today's head-scratcher in and . Hope someone can help me understand this. I've got both W10 and LM installed on my machine. While in LM, using dired in emacs, I can navigate through all of my linux directories. However, the file manager in LM shows a Windows directory, and I can see and access a lot of my W10 files (though not my Documents folder). Why is that? And how can I access all my Windows documents in LM? TIA!

@birv2 I'm not sure I'm following all of that - you're saying you see your Windows files in LM with the file browser, but not in Dired?

Also, I assume you have a dual-boot setup?

If the above two are true, keep in mind that the structure of the folders in Linux is different than what the LM file manager shows you (for example, you can see another hard drive, but it's actually under /media/user/...).

@jtr Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've got dual boot setup. W10 first, then LM. And yes, I can see my W10 files in the LM file manager, but not in dired. I don't see any subdirectories under /media in , btw.

@birv2 poor example on my part, that path example is too specific.

Can you see the folders in dired after you use LM file manager? The windows partition may not be mounted automatically and if you navigate there with file manager, it will mount it for you.

Copy the path from LM file manager and try to open it with find-file in dired: see if it works. Save the path as a bookmark in emacs, assuming it does; log out or reboot, try to go there without visiting with LM file manager first.

@birv2 my hunch is that you will need to play with your fstab a bit

@jtr amd here’s another head scratcher. In the file manager I can see all of my W10 desktop AND downloads folder files. But not my documents. Hmm.

@birv2 depending on your setup in Windows, your document might not be a "real" folder maybe. I vaguely recall some OneDrive shenanigans

@jtr Hmm. I’ll have to research that.

@birv2 @jtr There's a way to make Onedrive keep a copy of the files on your local computer, but I forget how.

There is a onedrive client for linux on github. but use with caution. even the maintainer states that it can freeze the computer if running in the background. I just run it once a day. And it's a bear to set up. If you're just starting with linux, hold off on it for a while. But it does work.
There's always the onedrive web interface to get at your files.

@EdHamilton @birv2 Yes, once you disconnect OneDrive from the computer (under options, "unlink this PC"), the folders should become "normal" and physical folders again.

But in any case, let's not make this about OneDrive... I will not stop complaining 😅

@jtr @EdHamilton Yup. Question about github. Would it be possible to use GH as a backup/syncing solution for my files? Are the files always public there? Thanks.

holgerschurig,

@birv2 @jtr @EdHamilton Quite a few of your questions are google-able ...
