Looking for some solid recos for how to use on on a dual boot machine (Win and LM). I want to expand the linux space but really don't want to screw up the drive(s). Can anyone steer me towards some clear instructions -- video or whatever. I've googled but don't want to just try anything. TIA.

@birv2 if you're talking about shrinking your Windows partition and then use that space to enlarge the Linux partition, I've done that. The latter part only works when you boot from a live system with GParted, because your Linux root partition needs to be unmounted.
I'd say it's a pretty safe operation if you keep a sane buffer when shrinking a partition. It takes a long time and there's no guarantee of the power is cut during the operation. But if there's no risk of power loss you can just try.

@mforester I have 2 drives. Windows is on C:, and I put Linux on S: (second). There's lots of space left on S, so I want to expand the space allotted to Linux. Does that make sense? But have no idea how. Thanks.

@birv2 if you want to go with GParted, you'll need to boot into a live system from a usb drive or something like that.
Or you boot into Windows and use another partition manager from there. 🙂
You'll need to identify the partition and then find the option to extend it. A right click on the right partition should do the trick.
If there's nothing else on the disk you should just be able to crank up the space allocated to the partition, boot back into LM and be done. 🙂

@mforester Hey, thanks! I can boot into Windows, but I saw some video where they said that expanding hard drive space for another OS can't be done with Windows tooks and requiresl gparted. Do you know anything about that?

@birv2 yeah, I think that's right. But there should be freeware tools available that can help you.
Or you can flash a GParted live system to a USB thumb drive and boot into that. 🙂

@birv2 I think this here should do the trick:

https://www.paragon-software.com/free/pm-express/

I haven't used that myself, but rather

https://www.easeus.de/partition-manager/partition-master-free.html

, but it seems like that page is again only available in German. 😩

My guess is that both tools should work. But I'm 99% sure that the onboard Windows Partition Manager can't handle Linux filesystems.

@birv2 sorry if that doesn't answer your question well enough. 😅
I find GParted easy enough to understand, but I've been messing with different partition managers before.
