cendawanita,

Wokeh, it is done: @magASEAN - now go subscribe and add stuff!!

emilydingwrites,

@cendawanita @magASEAN Btw, I'm a total noob about this 😅, but how do we add stuff – via Mastodon or via kbin...?

cendawanita,

@emilydingwrites
So far it's not straightforward mainly because masto build went out of its way to handicap certain options. SO: you can interact with kbin content especially as commenters. If the kbin mag track tags, if you use it your post will show up in the microblog (if the fetching and federation works properly). The threads section is the most like a forum and that one masto cannot communicate directly to make new content afaik, so you do need a kbin account (i don't think you have to be in the same instance but not sure about this) if you're keen to do so.

while i personally find posting to kbin magazines pretty straight forward - unlike @cendawanita - it is true that posting to kbin magazines comes with caveats:

  1. kbin magazines do not boost your post, unlike groups (a.gup.pe, chirp.social, or friendica), but they put a post into a curated and moderated context on a platform which mainly uses threads

  2. either you post directly to a kbin magazine by tagging it, or you add hashtags to your mastodon post which are scraped automatically by a kbin magazine via its tag function > tags employed by a kbin magazine can be found on the respective profile of a kbin magazine

  3. posts from microblogging platforms usually show up in the microblog section of a kbin magazine > i like it because it enhances visibility and searchability of microblog posts - but microblog posts e.g. from mastodon cannot start threads on kbin magazines

  4. if you want to start a thread on a kbin magazine, you either have to make use of the "add an article" function on kbin, i.e. (a) you need a kbin acc, (b) you need to understand that posts and articles are handled differently by kbin, with posts appearing in the microblog section, and articles starting threads, or ... today i learned:

if you have an acc on a friendica instance, it is possible to start threads on kbin magazines: you need to set a title for your post, so that kbin can recognize it as an article > see e.g. https://karab.in/m/test1006

this is not possible on microblogging platforms such as mastodon, pleroma, or the *keys

  1. adding a content warning to e.g. a mastodon post does not help trying to start a thread on a kbin magazine: at the moment, kbin does not display cw's from microblogging platforms - cw's just vanish, and cw'ed posts are showing up in the microblog section of kbin magazines, with cw's having disappeared > see e.g. https://karab.in/m/test1006/microblog

  2. several people advised to tag kbin magazines at the end of a post to ensure that it reaches the tagged kbin magazine > sticking to some good advice is never wrong, and so far, it has worked for me :abunhdhappy:
    @magASEAN

testing,

@emilydingwrites @cendawanita forgot to include one point, so here it is:

kbin magazines do not spam your timeline - quite unlike groups from a.gup.pe, chirp.social or friendica > more exactly: kbin magazine do not boost a single post to your timeline > only accs which you are already following will appear in your timeline when posting to a kbin magazine you have subscribed to

the point of subscribing to a kbin magazine is not to receive posts in your timeline, but to enable oneself to post to a kbin magazine

i love this approach, as it leaves my home timeline in peace, and it would always make me curious about what is going on at kbin :blobcat_laughing: - kbin magazines feel like opening a box full of gifts ❤️ @magASEAN

cendawanita,

I like that it doesn't boost activity so I don't see every single comment activity but I think it would be more correct to say it doesn't federate content well because it's the same behaviour be it something addressed to m/somechannel or original content posted there. Because while I can follow m/somechannel from this fedi account, I don't see subsequent activity on the account, not even the top-level post. This leaves an impression that the m/somechannel is dead. You'll have to go to the magazine itself... BUT if you don't have a login onto that instance, there's additional friction in navigating.

Oh fantastic, this is helpful!

By the way I found that the microblog tag-scraping seems to seek and match the first tag in a post and that's it. There's a kbin post that tagged Malaysia first then MYToots to be posted on Malaysia mag but it didn't show up on MagASEAN but does show up on kbin.social's general timeline for that tag + my post that had many tags before MYToots and wasn't picked up unlike on my regular fedi timeline since I'm following that hashtag.

The first example could also be due to limited/slow federation but the second example seems quite conclusive of a current limitation, i think.

I'm gonna go to sleep now, but so far your post didn't show up in the microblog section as well, so maybe it'll take time. I think there's an accidental delimiter function or whatever it is that causes kbin to not parse entire messages to the end (so it misses the matching ID or tag)
@emilydingwrites @magASEAN

other than mastodon, calckey does not federate very well with kbin > maybe the post will never show up ...

thank you for your insights on tags ❤️

  1. kbin magazines do not boost your post, unlike groups (a.gup.pe, chirp.social, or friendica), but they put a post into a curated and moderated context on a platform which mainly uses threads

  2. whatever is happening on a kbin magazine - it will not automatically show up in your timeline on mastodon or any other microbloging platform > only posts to kbin magazines from accs which you are already following will appear in your timeline

now if you are like: baaaahhhh, why have i followed a kbin magazine if it does not automatically boost posts? - let me be clear on this: groups which boost posts can be pretty annoying by spamming your timeline! i appreciate that kbin magazines are like boxes which you can open once in a while, only to be surprised by what's inside

  1. either you post directly to a kbin magazine by tagging it, or you hashtags to your mastodon post which are scraped automatically by a kbin magazine via its tag function
