mho,

It seems like it's not the UI or the usability, that get's people to leave nowadays but - small, yet vocal and totally not self-critical - parts of the community, that can't stop lecturing others about the and how to act/post/comment here or about what.
German Mastodon had the ridiculous debate about , other parts similar stuff (scolding someone for -photos... really?).
Maybe the recent update helps people get it together, otherwise it will get even quieter here.

jupiter_rowland,

@Martin Holland This gets particularly ridiculous when such people try to force what they think is "the Mastodon way" upon Fedizens who are entirely elsewhere than Mastodon. Especially Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams); not only do these three work and handle vastly different from Mastodon, not only do they have features that Mastodon users can hardly imagine, but the former two were actually there before Mastodon.

So either they're blissfully unaware that whomever they're scolding for not acting as they're expected to act on Mastodon is not even on Mastodon. Or they try to force the whole Fediverse to turn into only Mastodon or at least act as if everything's Mastodon with Mastodon's limitations and Mastodon's "culture" (as if Mastodon had only one culture).

This can neither be justified with "but your posts can be read on Mastodon, so you're on Mastodon all right" nor with "Mastodon makes up 80% of the Fediverse, so Mastodon and only Mastodon gets to say how things are done".

@mho

Agree to some extent, but the janitors here are a soft breeze compared to the cerberi of usenet groups.
=;)
Quiet times, companero, not only here, but everywhere in social networks. Twitter braindead, Blsky an empty promise of good ol' times returning.
People are hustling to make ends meet & a general notion of us being fucked climatewise is around. Two wars sprung up at our borders & that is why we can't have nice things currently.
At least for a while.

mho,

@harkank
But how many here remember the usenet? 😅 I'm too young for example, and am not that young anymore.

haui,

@mho the broader issue really shines through and it’s not only mastodon but lemmy, stackoverflow and others where people loose their shit when someone isn’t already proficient.

The amount of vitriol people RTFM others with is insane. Gatekeeping is the issue. Feeling superior for being here longer/first, identifying with being more knowledgeable and so on.

Thats one reason why I simply remove comments like suggesting to RTFM or similar.

Jackthelad,

@mho Yes, there's an annoying minority of busybodies on here, who won't be happy until everyone uses their accounts the way they want them to.

Sylkeweb,

@mho
So far I haven’t seen too much of that personally but yeah, it can get annoying seeing comments like that. The problems between users have many facets:

Sylkeweb,

@mho
A) A lot of newcomers are used to social media services where all users have more or less the same experience and are not aware that there are so many different things at play here, not only the differences between the likes of Mastodon, Friendica, Hubzilla but also already between the user interfaces used. Using a the web interface is one thing, accessing your timeline through an app or a web client another one.

Sylkeweb,

@mho
They all give you different features and even call things by different names. It’s a steep learning curve if you are willing and able to spend some time on understanding all of that.
B) The unwillingness of some people to even understand certain features like CW. The unwillingness of other people to not accept that some users are better being muted or blocked if they don’t want to see their posts.

Sylkeweb,

@mho
C) The attitude of some of the longtime users (yes, sorry). It does not help at all to tell people who are not happy with some of the aspects of the Fediverse to set up their own servers if they are not technically minded. It also does not help to expect that all of the newcomers will play by their book.

Welches Update ? Also ich mag es hier ruhig, nichts dagegen.

    @NatureMC

    But especially this app update feels like patronising for many.

    Yep, will help Mastodon to fail.> Hey, I am here to talk to strangers. I want to be free not only of algorithms but to answer to old stuff or bost old stuff.

    Exactly. Just imagine coding projects where not many people are active, then answers need long. Or retro computing topics and so on ... > Will the target auditory, the trolls, change by clicking it?

    No. Mastodon has the problem like other platforms, they have to do something that they can say we did something. If they don´t want that people comment under old toots / posts then people should auto delete them after a given time.

    @mho

    cymaphore,

    @mho I'm not on bsky, so a honest question. Beside the caretaker-algorythm, how is different in a day to day experience?

    I'm Wondering how the connection between bsky and the fediverse, something I deem pretty much unavoidable at this point, will impact it all.

    mho,

    @cymaphore
    I have an account, but don't use it. So I don't know. But I imagine that the people who have always been there, and know (and like to explain) how you have to use it, are missing 😉

    kkarhan,

    @mho Some folks are just assholes that want to dictate others how to post instead of pressing and/or button if they can't handle someone...

    But then again we see Egoists like abusing his () as a tool for personal vendettas and to silence critics, so I'm not surprised about it...
