Anyone know a tool for doing analytics on #Mastodon follows and followers? I'd like to prune truly dormant accounts (no posts or replies visible even on their own server, not just ones that have made it to mine if I don't follow them) and followers who never interact with my posts.
@freakazoid gah, there was a tool, which would take you through your follows and show you their latest posts and you could keep or unfollow - wish I could remember its name
While not peak time, still beautiful #aurora here in #NewMexico, with a star-filled sky and virtually no light pollution. Thanks to those here on #mastodon who urged everybody to get outside and take photos of the #AuroraBorealis.

@kev I'm a little concerned about the notifications for severed relationships. I don't think it's a bad idea, but I really want it to be obvious why the relationship was severed. If randominstance.social decides to block Fosstodon, we may not have any idea why that happened, and if people on Fosstodon are losing relationships over the block, those people might be rightly coming to us and our team for some WTF conversation. It would be helpful if the notifications point to the actioning instance.
As a fun little experiment, @damon and I worked together to get a #Mastodon instance up and running that stores media on #IPFS! It was an interesting learning experience.
I don’t think we’re ready to announce anything yet, as this was in service of another project in development. But, there’s an increasing number of ways to host content on an IPFS node service, and tie it back to platforms like Mastodon using an S3-compatible API for Object Storage and some proxying.
This is all pretty rudimentary, but the big-brain realization is that a more robust version could be done by pairing Minio to s3x if we wanted to self-host an IPFS node with those specific features.

I expect more of this, not just re #IPFS but as #p2p systems are happening, storage models will change for the better. #Autonomi is the project I'm most familiar with and they have already talked about this and have partners ready to upload their data. They are not yet revealed, but I wouldn't be surprised if replacing AWS was in there.
I'm working on a demo myself in the area of web publishing and browsing, and am very excited about this whole area, so I wish you luck. @damon
@deadsuperhero I don't get why you see so "few narrow applications". IPFS storage could be used to store the media (videos, sounds). We then could hope that every instance where someone follow you will get the toot and store the attachments in their local IPFS node. So, the more popular your content become, the more it is available, à la BitTorrent. You then can selfhost on your instance and no longer need costly CDN, S3. Benefits seems obvious to me but I may miss something 🤔
Although #mastodon is the elephant in the room (see what I did there), the #fediverse is way more than just that. I want to look at other ways to engage with the wider Fediverse, just for fun and my own education. I have a #pixelfed account that I never use but maybe I'll move all my image posting to it and just repost it here, etc. Still mulling.
@nosaj Oh absolutely, but everyone who follows my Mastodon may not also follow my Pixelfed since they’re different servers etc. The Achilles Heel of the Fediverse has always been no single portable identity. Glad to see folks smarter than me now talking about that 😂
@failedLyndonLaRouchite People in theory have mixed feelings and then in practice vote against extreme right parties by very large margins. If anything the filter bubble goes the other way - there was few immigrants in politics, so politicos are missing out on big pro-immigration constituencies (and also on pro-EU ones, since intra-EU migrants don't usually go into politics either) and then don't know how to enact immigration reform that actually speaks to us.

@hannahneurotica I haven't heard of such an instance. As you know, we aren't very good at organising things... I suspect most of our talking just happens via hashtags. Tag me if you hear of such a place though!

PS TO EVERYBODY ELSE: if Mastodon won't do this, which other platform does? Friendica? if am going to have to run my own AP platform, not being able to block DMs is a deal breaker.
A lot of people have talked about the possibility of forking #Mastodon to get the many improvements their communities need. Making such an effort successful is another discussion entirely.

That might say more about what you're seeing than what people are saying. The way I phrased it was
"It's worth highlighting that a new hard fork complements the official Mastodon fork, which is likely to remain a better alternative for large, Threads-friendly instances like mastodon.social."

And yeah, I may have been projecting some of my own discomforts a bit. The last few calls for a hard fork, to me, have felt less like “let’s build our own thing together!” and more like a call to abandon Mastodon in favor of this amazing hypothetical fork where some other person is the SABDFL.
I think there is very much a need for an alternative to Mastodon. I’m not sure it’s necessarily Mastodon itself.
2 weeks ago I had no idea how to host a #Mastodon
Today I have 14 services running on my own domain, with admin panel, backups, monitoring, email, SSO (so good to have the same user across all the services!)
I still need to do some tweaks to the services, but for a single user all running well.
As I am using 2 VPS the total cost is € 9,50/month + a donation of 5€ to :yunohost: project.
I could run everything on my own home, maybe I will do that in the future.
We just published our first Trunk & Tidbits post! This will hopefuly be a monthly update where we showcase what we worked on last month, and what's coming next.
I hope this will bring more visibility to all the efforts and love that put on Mastodon
