Is there something on like the old hashtag we used on Twitter?

I would like to get hold of a single academic paper without paying some exploitative corporation $25.

I already tried Sci Hub.

@negative12dollarbill I have heard you can email the author(s) directly…

Otherwise, would it be on jstor? You have to register but can read up to 100 articles free even without going through your public library

https://www.jstor.org/

@wendypalmer
I have emailed the author, who is still around, although they have transitioned since they wrote the paper which is listed under their dead name!

@negative12dollarbill oh, great, I hope they can help you out.

(I must admit academic citations hadn’t crossed my mind before as a concern for transitioning. Hopefully there’s a standard way of dealing with it; maybe this will give the author a chance to have the citation updated or something….)

@wendypalmer @negative12dollarbill Out of curiosity, I checked JSTOR and they have a policy to support name changes (due to transitioning or any other reason). This is likely similar across academia.

...but there's a catch. This only works smoothly so long as the actual publisher agrees and for work hosted there but not directly published by platforms like Sage or JSTOR, there isn't a guarantee all of them (i.e. certain entities with religious affiliations) would all be on the same page.

@Trajecient @negative12dollarbill oh that’s interesting, thanks. I mean, I’d guess they’d need a policy for eg married name changes, but deadnaming is a bit different to before and after a wedding…

@wendypalmer @negative12dollarbill It is and part of the policy is to suppress the former name when requested which is associated with transitions.

...that looks to be a more recent development that is designed with the need to avoid deadnaming in mind.
