Lemm.ee is dead

UPDATE 2 WEEKS LATER:

I’m moving my account to another instance. What instance? I don’t know yet, it might take some time to research the most fitting server for me. If lemm.ee can’t defederate from incel, nazi and totally radicalized instances then I’m gone.

B-b-but you can block them yourself!!1!1

Yes. However I have to look at this shit everytime I enter Lemmy and new subs grow like mushrooms after the rain. I’m tired of seeing recycled low quality jpeg propaganda memes, lemmy should not even be political at all, but people will fuck up everything. I advise everyone who made an account here by mistake to follow my path. Admin won’t step down to satisfy one person. From what I’ve seen lemme.ee is closely related to hexbear (based on activity), even if it’s not said anywhere. If you’re a person that emigrated from reddit, then emigrating from this shithole will be less hustle than you think. I’m just sad it took me so much time to realize what I had dived into. I’ll be under a new username to cut all my ties with lemme.ee. Goodbye.

OG Post:

It’s over. You broke the federation.

It’s currently one of the worst servers out there. Insane login times, viewing profile and inbox takes forever, other users don’t see your comments, still can’t share images in comments while other servers can, and has many toxic instances that have not been defederated yet (why?).

One of the things I noticed when I was new is how people recommended joining low populated servers to help with fediverse diversity. Lemmy.world was bursting and it made sense at that time, but now I changed my mind. It’s unreliable as fuck. You see all this shit happening to lemm.ee but not other servers. I would never recommend condemning your username by joining this shithole. It’s my first post and probably the last one. Idk, go rollback to version 0.1 maybe it was the only one working fine. Lemm.ee has fallen, but I guess that’s what happens when your server is a raspberry pi of some underage kid. Raise the flag, shit server claims another soul.

TWeaK,

lemm.ee has always been one of the most stable instances lol. When other instances had issues in the past, lemm.ee was typically immune already, and our admin was front and centre helping the other instances out.

There were issues with 0.19.0, which have now largely been addressed. The site here is as speedy as ever now.

vsh,
@vsh@lemm.ee avatar

Speed is just the tip of the iceberg here.

TWeaK,

So what issues are actually currently bothering you? Given that your last post here is a version and massive hardare upgrade behind where we are now.

vsh,
@vsh@lemm.ee avatar

I have updated my post. Mainly it’s the lack of interest from admin, instance is nearly on the same level as hexbear or lemmygrad, which doesn’t sound appealing. Maybe a bit whitewashed but definitely you can see it in others people comments.

Server issues are actually admin issues. It’s his server after all, and he doesn’t seem to care that much. He should watch and learn from lemmy.world before spinning up his own instance. I know it’s a software and it will continue receiving updates, but if the last update was done properly, there would be no need for me to make this post. This entire instance is giving off bad energy. I can’t bother with this shit any more, that’s why I’m leaving. Enough is enough.

TWeaK,

I’ve answered the defederation part in my other comment. We are not associated with lemmygrad or hexbear, however some of their users exploit the open philosophy to run their alts here - they can use one login here to see both hexbear and lemmy.world. However, they have to behave themselves and can’t get away with the shit they do behind the corrupt mods of hexbear.

Mate you clearly haven’t been paying attention, or you’ve just not been here long. lemmy.world has had far bigger problems with loading times and other things than lemm.ee. When that happened, /u/sunaurus was front and centre telling them how to fix things. When they got hacked or when they got DDOSed, /u/sunaurus was stepping up and helping them - while his instance was completely immune to the problems, thanks to his personal innovation and attention to detail. He has also directly contributed to the core lemmy codebase, improving things for all other instances.

Yes, lemm.ee had a few problems that came about with v0.19. lemmy.world did not face these problems, because lemmy.world had already applied excessive server resources to their instance; lemm.ee had been built with efficient code allowing more lean infrastructure. v0.19 screwed that up by introducing bugs, and /u/sunaurus’ response was to not only fix that in code but switch to beefier infrastructure. Right now, as I understand it, we are back in the lead in being both beefier and more efficient than lemmy.world (at least on a per user metric).

The only one giving off bad energy here is you. You want to bitch about something, but you can’t accept that the things you’re bitching about aren’t actually that valid. You don’t want to go to other instances, because you have even more things to bitch about there. It feels like there’s no pleasing you.

Which is exactly what I don’t want to see here. Lemmee is full of them. Eastern shills with a different nick but same ideas.

This comparison was purely based on how they solved their problems. Not how they gained them. Also lemmee was never as popular as world and you can’t blame them for not keeping up during the mass migration. Tbh what’s the point of hypothetical DDoSing of lemmee… I don’t know. But we all understand that world is a bigger target.

So efficient that sunaurus disappeared from public when shit hit the fan with literally an infrastructure of a Lego bridge.

I have full right to bitch and give feedback. However lemmee is as dull and negative as one can imagine. In my case, this is not the instance for me, and thank God I realized this sooner rather than later. See ya suckers 👋🏻 maybe reddit was not that bad as you people advertised 😅

TWeaK,

Just saw your edit above. So is it mainly that they won’t defederate? If you want that, then you need to move to lemmy.world, sh.itjust.works or beehaw.org. These instances would more fit that ideology.

/u/sunaurus quite clearly wanted to defederate from lemmygrad.ml and hexbear. He’s from Estonia, a former Soviet country that absolutely does not like Russia. Estonia gained independence from the Soviet Union, but instead of a violent revolution, they won their freedom by singing.

The only reason you think this instance is associated with those instances is because some users from those instances started to moonlight over here after their instance was defederated from lemmy.world and other major community instances. lemm.ee is as open as reasonably possible - spammers are blocked, but others are allowed for the sake of allowing open discussion. Users from lemmygrad and hexbear also moonlight on lemmy.ml now, since the defederations, but lemmy.ml communities are often moderated in the same style as those tankie communities.

I was banned from hexbear for frivilous reasons, well before they started making alt accounts here. I kind of wanted lemm.ee to defederate, if only so I didn’t keep seeing hexbear posts in my feed that I couldn’t comment on. Now, I can block hexbear and not see their communities, but I can still call them out in less oppressively moderated subs whenever they step out. Usually they don’t, because they’re pussies when they don’t have mods to hide behind.

lemmygrad.ml has some of the same shit, but it’s at least a little bit more rational. I can argue with them and toe their lines, even if I get nothing but downvotes.

So yeah, if you don’t like how lemm.ee is federated, then maybe it just isn’t the instance for you. You would be better off with another. However, that isn’t a flaw in lemm.ee - certainly not a technical flaw, which your original post was focused on - that’s just, like, your opinion, man.

Spzi,

when your server is a raspberry pi of some underage kid

You couldn’t be further from the truth. sunaurus has been an exemplary admin, with clear communication and obvious competence. He’s even contributing to the source code and helped other admins in troubling times.

Yes the situation is/was bad, but for anyone who followed the server, as an exception. Coincidentally right around the holidays.

It’s fine if you rather want to move to another instance, but can you do so unlike an underage kid, slinging fabricated dirt on your way out?

wintermute_oregon,

The db upgrade has been fire. It’s working great now

fossphi,

Holy shit, man. You can ask for your money back if it really stings that much.

The other issues aside (which will be solved in due time) I’m glad that we don’t defederate willy nilly, you can always block instances as a user

    Not having some ideological defederation policy is precisely the reason I have my main account here.

    See ya later 👋

    I thought it was a good idea as well. Until obnoxious propaganda started to spill on my /all screen. It’s very one sided too.

    fossphi, (edited )

    Block and move on, you’re an adult. At least I hope so

    Navarian,

    Is it just me that has had zero problems? I can’t say I even understand half of what you’re talking about here.

    I run a community here and I’ve had essentially 0 issues that weren’t addressed appropriately quickly by the admin team.

    Have fun elsewhere.

    vsh,

    Perhaps you missed what happened during the last weeks. Updating lemmee to 0.19v caused all variations of fuckery and broke the instancing inside out. But hohoho 🎅 devs are sleeping because it’s holidays.

    SurvivalMariner,

    The devs run it on lemmy.ml for a while and said it was ok to update. You cannot blame lemm.ee for trusting that. These things are complex and things get missed. You’d probably know that if you contributed to open source, rather than consume and complain when it isn’t perfect. Keep leeching elsewhere.

    Was testing on production ever a good idea?

    bamboo,

    You always do some testing in production. You can do unit testing, integration testing, and even some load testing before deployment, but you will always find bugs once it’s rolled out to production with a bunch of variables you cannot control and couldn’t have possibly accounted for. That’s why most software has point releases, it’s inevitable on any marginally complex software.

    TexMexBazooka,

    Lol, get outta here you entitled shit

    vsh,
    @vsh@lemm.ee avatar

    Stay silent and enjoy your shitty server or speak up and ask for change. It’s your decision.

    illi,

    It’s my first post and probably the last one.

    k, bye

    vsh,
    @vsh@lemm.ee avatar

    I don’t feel obligated to post. The current situation caused me to take extreme measures.

    TexMexBazooka,

    “Extreme”

    Bahahaha

    Engywuck,

    So much entitlement here… Just spin your instance up on a big ass server (and pay for it) instead of complaining about something that is given to you for free.

    vsh,
    @vsh@lemm.ee avatar

    If I had the resources, I would.

    For now, it’s easier to make a new account elsewhere.

    infeeeee,

    Create more accounts on other instances. Most mobile apps support switching between them. It’s also useful to have separate accounts for separate topics, so if someone stalks you it’s harder to figure out who are you irl.

    On an other posts they wrote @sunaurus is not available during the holidays, but he will fix things afterwards. But afaik the federation bug is not solved yet anywhere, it affects all 0.19.* instances. Working instances simply haven’t updated yet.

    Blamemeta,

    Rolling back to a working version is common practice in the IT world.

    nocturne213,

    And you know for a fact it works for lemmy?

    Blamemeta,

    No, but it should, and I would hope it would. I know it’s an open source project, not a corporate one, and that usually means lax standards, but I would hope it would.

    areyouevenreal,

    You’ve got this wrong. Proprietary software can be very lax. Open source software can be very stable. Depends who is developing it and what resources they have available. Linux kernel for example is pretty damn reliable as are the BSDs; they are used in data centers all the time for this reason. Lemmy clearly is not one of the stable Open Source projects despite using Rust. I wonder if kbin is doing better.

    ARk,

    ok
