dick_stitches,

In case anyone is wondering, that’s $300 for every man, woman, and child in the United States. Not just tax payers, every single person

sygnius,

Or about $12 for every single person in the entire world.

On a separate note, war machines are very expensive and definitely overpriced.

HurlingDurling,

If my government could just give every American just 0.0000005% of that most people would be in a mich better place economically and mentally in this country.

nakal,
nakal avatar

The problem is always that we small people never have the big picture of such things. Sure, 100 billion is much, but one never gives money for free. There is something about it that will give USA as a country a huge advantage.

arin,

About 300 million US citizens so that’s $333. Less than the stimulus checks the first 2 years of covid

PatFussy,

Give everyone 5k? Like more Biden bucks?

PP_BOY_,
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

How about domestic aid

Melkath,

He is fucking funding Israel but can't make student loan forgiveness or covid relief a thing.

I fucking hate The Party...

Zorque,

He had a student loan forgiveness program last year that Republicans blockaded...

Cleverdawny,

No, no, shh, everything is biden’s fault and we are all going to throw a tantrum about it

Melkath,

Isn't it convenient how that's always the case.

The Party is The Party. It never changes. And people keep voting for them.

ROCK THE VOTE! MTV told me it does something so it must be true!

reallynotnick,

The SAVE plan is a huge improvement for addressing student debt long term and they are still perusing other means for loan forgiveness.

sin_free_for_00_days,

30+ years of voting for change, only to be massively outvoted by partisans and morons every single time.

TransplantedSconie,

Gerrymandering in 2010 fucked this country bad, mate. The only thing that can fix it is a massive amount of people voting to overcome the Gerrymandering.

It’s working. 2022 was supposed to be a “Massive Red Wave” they barely won the House and lost the Senate.

Register to vote, get everyone you know to register, and vote. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s meaningless.

If it wasn’t, they wouldn’t try as hard as they do to stop you from doing it.

Melkath, (edited )

Yes, and if we do so and cause a "Massive Blue Wave" we can see wonderful things! Like more tens if not hundreds of billions of dollars being sent to Israel to terrorize and murder Palestinian civilians!

TransplantedSconie,

You don’t need the more. You can type it “Like tens if not hundreds of billions of dollars being sent to Israel…”

Maybe we will, maybe we won’t.

Looks like to me that although we have pledged 10 billion to Israel, it would be on a tight leash with many caveats attached. Biden did get both Israel and Egypt to allow aid in to the people of Gaza. Ol’ Diamond Joe was working that Scranton charm.

Melkath,

The mental gymnastics.

Dear God, the aggressive mental gymnastics.

bibliotectress,

bOtH pArTiEs ArE the SaMe

Please for the love of Jebus, look at voting records of both parties. They’re very, very different. I can’t believe with access to all of this info at your fingertips, you’re still trying to tell people that both parties are the same and voting does nothing. Mind-blowing.

TransplantedSconie,

Yeah. I’m betting this person isn’t American at all. Anyone who isn’t a blind partisan hack can see the stark difference in the two parties. It’s fun that they brought up the supermajority that Obama had for about a year that was used to forge the ACA (which Lieberman fucked up on behalf of the insurance industry) and promptly lost in the 2010 election where the Republicans gerrymandered everything six ways from Sunday. Oh, well.

, get everyone you know to register, and vote Republicans out next year.

Melkath,

So back to my points above.

When the Democrats had the supermajority, they codified Roe v Wade, right?

That voting record really makes me eat my words.

What about a sitting Democrat condemning the baseless murder of thousands of people a day.

The Democrat was against that and didn't just send 50 billions of dollars to fund a terrorist state to buy bombs from the American war machine, right?

Silence yourself.

Surp,
@Surp@lemmy.world avatar

Correct your self. We fucking all hate Republicans and Democrats.

Melkath,

Yes. Republicans and Democrats. The Party.

Surp,
@Surp@lemmy.world avatar

Gotta say it the long way or else!

Melkath,

Nope.

Refuse to act like they are different things.

HurlingDurling,

The parties, because both are shit

BlinkerFluid,

I just drafted my vote for someone else.

BackOnMyBS,
@BackOnMyBS@lemmy.world avatar

Who else can someone vote in a way that doesn’t help a Republican (likely Trump) become the next POTUS?

BlinkerFluid,

I don’t personally believe either decision is going to save America from misinformation, extremism and possibly collapse in the long run.

Melkath, (edited )

You break the 2 party system that forces you to vote for someone you dislike or someone you dislike more.

(Redacted: Tons of American Presidents have been third party.

Reason: a) Thought Theodore Roosevelt won as bull moose and b) misunderstood when I heard about "Democratic-Republican", "Federalist", and "Whig" Presidents.)

The modern delusion that a vote for a GOOD candidate is a wasted vote is horse shit.

ono, (edited )

The modern delusion that a vote for a GOOD candidate is a wasted vote is horse shit.

No, it is not. (It is horse shit in the sense of being a terrible situation, but it is not a delusion.)

Here’s a simple explanation of why it’s a wasted vote, especially if the race is close:

Politics in the Animal Kingdom

You break the 2 party system

Yes, that would be great, but it requires changing the voting system. Unfortunately, the people with the power to do it have a strong incentive to block it.

baronvonj,
@baronvonj@lemmy.world avatar

It requires changing the voting system in every state individually.

SheeEttin,

Zero American Presidents have been third-party. The only election where a candidate outside the two major parties of the era got a large-ish share of votes was in 1912 when Theodore Roosevelt ran in the Bull Moose party and split the Republican vote. (edit: maybe 1860 too)

Here’s a graphic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PartyVotes-Presidents.png

Melkath,

Thanks for the graphic. Doesn't change my stance, but corrects some misconceptions that I had.

Melkath,

Why does it matter?

Republicans and Democrats are the same fucking thing.

Remember when Democrats had a supermajority in both the house in the senate and were called upon to codify the right to abortion into the constitution and their answer was "don't feel like it. Roe v Wade was enough"?

I remember that.

Remember when the sitting Democrat president penned an "aid package" that siphoned 50 BILLION dollars to Israel to reward them for weeks of shelling civilian targets in Palestine?

Wait. That's just now. That's what the "progressive" president is doing right now.

It doesn't fucking matter. It is a 2 party system only in show.

There are 2 ways to increase the value of your ballot. The first is to use it to vote for people who aren't indoctrinated into "the party". The second is to wipe your ass with it and save on your toilet paper budget.

BraveSirZaphod,
BraveSirZaphod avatar

I certainly hope you don't think that Republicans aren't also wholely in support of Israel. They also have absolutely zero sympathy for Palestinians at all.

BlinkerFluid,

You think neither is an option? I do. Sorry, but I’m not helping someone I don’t agree with. Some call it a spine.

Melkath, (edited )

Preach.

A vote for a Republican or a Democrat is a vote for The Party.

If you vote red OR blue, YOU are the problem.

Valdair,
Valdair avatar

Unfortunately you can't just recuse yourself from society. You're still impacted by who the president is even if you don't vote for them.

You're still using public utilities. Driving on public roads. Interacting with people who went to public schools.

Acting like both choices are the same because they will always eventually do something you don't like is disingenuous and you know it.

BlinkerFluid,

and I don’t believe any of those factors are improving without either a collapse or a revolution. There are better wastes of paper found in most bathrooms.

Hyperreality,

Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital, effectively kicking the two state solution in the nuts, was widely condemned by world leaders, and was officialy cited by Hamas as the reason to start a new intifada. Biden didn't change course on this.

He also officially recognized the Golan Heights as being part of Israel. Biden didn't change course on this either.

Then there was that Iranian general he had assassinated. He recently mentioned the Israelis being on board to help assassinate him till they backed out last minute, despite Israeli protestations to the contrary. I assume, because assassinating another country's generals is a potential casus belli, and even Netenyahu didn't want to antagonize Iran that openly.

He also announced a peace plan which suggested Israel annex (a further) 30% of the west bank, then helped push through the Abraham accords. In retrospect, it's likely that the normalisation of relations between Israel and some of its Arab neighbours, was seen as a betrayal by Hamas, and a threat to Iran. Biden didn't change course on this, and it is rumoured that Israel and Saudi Arabia were about to sign a deal, until Hamas attacked.

OutlierBlue,

Biden: “Hey! Stop the genocide of those Palestinians!”

Also Biden: “By the way, here’s $10 billion

wolf6152,

100 billion. One hundred billion dollars.

OutlierBlue,

The article said most will go to Ukraine, with $10 billion for Israel.

sturmblast,

it should all go to Ukraine in my opinion

wolf6152,

This report says $40 billion of the $100 billion. The dollar amount doesn’t matter. At the end of the day the US doesn’t have a nationwide healthcare system and 18% of the population is in some sort of housing insecurity.

nbcnews.com/…/biden-expected-seek-60b-ukraine-aid…

Fredselfish,
@Fredselfish@lemmy.world avatar

How about 100 billion to Americans struggling or cancel some student loans. We can’t have affordable healthcare. But we can keep sending billions to other country.

1bluepixel,
@1bluepixel@lemmy.world avatar

How about you tax billionaires and do both.

PP_BOY_,
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah that’s ideal but if we can only have one, this is by far the less popular of the options

dumdum666,

It is not about the money Fred. If they wanted to, they would find the money - politicians always do. The only time when there is no money available is when they don’t want to do a certain „project“

BraveSirZaphod,
BraveSirZaphod avatar

That would cover about 5% of all student loan debt.

I_Fart_Glitter,

What’s the difference between a billion and a trillion?

About a trillion.

Current US student debt: $1.77 trillion.

DoomBot5,

You mean that other initiative he’s been working on that the Republicans have been fighting tooth and nail against?
