Oooh, has the node graph functionality, which allows you to compose vector objects from the primitives like fill, stroke, transform and live filters in a visual manner!

Node graph interface and filters both give me this nice break-out I needed after LPEs in . Don't get me wrong: that program is THE legend, developers are masters of vectors, and it's purely native Gtk toolkit on which application is built. Right now, their priority is CMYK support, so follow if you're into printing.

I just love to experiment with shiny new software that's , especially one that uses and to its advantage.

Watch 'em apply circular repeat filter on a mere line to produce this fun sparkle effect. (It is Graphite's official channel, by the way. Wish they were on Mastodon?)

ahoyboyhoy,

@vintprox thanks for sharing this! Never heard of graphite before, but I starred this and hope to tinker with it soon. I've been trying to tear my partner away from macOS and Adobe for the past three years since I migrated to Linux desktop and this tool could be a gamechanger! Then I'd just need a killer self hosted browser based photo library/DAM.

@ahoyboyhoy Glad it helped! :D

Speaking of self-hosted libraries, I discovered that, unnfortunately, media powerhouse Jellyfin doesn't has photo albums yet. Would be a great time just casually switching between my favorite movies, music and photos.

@itsfoss has an article about Piwigo, just a solution you might want to look into: https://itsfoss.com/piwigo/

@vintprox I took a look yesterday at graphite but it seems my monitor is too small? It cuts some off? Also I couldn’t find resizing objects …

@bowreality

What in particular you're having cut off? I suppose it is a bit stiffling to work with lower resolutions. You can change the size of the right side bar and it will stretch proportionally to the window.

If you need to scale the object, there are these handles on each corner of the selection. Press S to interactively scale without holding any mouse button.

@vintprox Hm I can’t remember what exactly it cut off but it was icons. I launched it again and it seems fine now. Not sure what happened there. I am on a fairly new Macbook so I didn’t think resolution would be an issue. Regarding scaling I would need specific measurements in cm and mm actually. Affinity has a transform menu that lets me set height and weight etc. I might just not have found that?

@bowreality Good catch! Graphite lacks measurements besides pixels. They've simplified width and height to "Scale", precise controls for which can be found in the Properties panel.

What I can give Graphite over Inkscape is that snapping is very fast and more guided. Dunno how it's in Affinity Designer, but, if I had to strike a guess, it must be good enough.

@vintprox I just found the transform menu but it’s only pixel? Can I switch that to cm/mm?
That also led me to the “cut off” issue that I ran into. I’ll attach screenshots. I can move out the side as you mentioned but then it cuts the top and even the file menus. I haven’t found the sweet spot that doesn’t cut off the right while keeping the top ok. Browser is Safari 17.3 btw.

Screenshot with highlighting the top menus cut off

@bowreality You are right, it cuts off the top bar and it's not adaptive at all. Some could live with this small scrollbar, because they have mouse wheels and a good memory, but personally I would just be frustrated if I had to deal with it every day, haha.
