Ottawa taxi lawsuit finds City negligent in allowing Uber to operate in 2014

"The evidence establishes that the City knew that its failure to properly enforce the 2012 Bylaw would likely cause harm to the taxi industry.

“A multinational giant was invading Ottawa, and because of the City’s unpreparedness and its lack of efforts to develop a plan to enforce the 2012 Bylaw, the City’s enforcement efforts against Uber drivers were ineffective.”

BedSharkPal,

I still can’t believe the taxi plate system is even a thing. If Uber and co can kill that concept at least I’ll consider it a win.

cm0002,

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, FUCK TAXI COMPANIES

Don’t be fooled, they’re textbook playing the victim, if anything they’re just pissed they didn’t have the idea first to do what Uber/Lyft are doing

Last gasp of a shitty industry that needs to die.

Xabis,

It always seemed like taxi companies were mafia controlled or something. However, I am not sure the labor abuses by Uber has been any better.

They both suck.

cm0002,

Absolutely, but Uber/Lyft are very marginally better, mostly because all the old cabbie tricks (i.e. identifying non-local people and taking them the LONG way) don’t work and when Uber tells you a car is on the way with a time frame they usually are accurate. Compared to some phone dispatch that just tells you a car is “just 10 minutes away” for 2 hours.

I’d like to see them both die off, but I’m perfectly happy seeing the taxi industry get their just desserts first.

Fiivemacs,

I cannot say one fucking thing nice about Uber. I attempted to sign up once. Needed to get home asap. Never got a welcome email. Never had my account activated or anything. I literally couldn’t sign up. Ended up alling a taxi and got home.

Fast forward a few months…fucking Uber charges on my bank statement. What account? Doesn’t exist. Tried forgot password…account doesn’t exist. Tried to contact the ‘company’ tells me to login.

Banks refused because ‘you signed up and we can’t prove you didn’t get the ride’.

Only Avenue I had was to find the dispatch for the drivers, and basically protest in the building preventing their drivers from getting help so I could speak to a human.

Fuck Uber to high hell. Taxis saved my ass and I’ve never once been fuxked by taxi (other then them not showing)

bionicjoey,

Sounds like you had a very unusual experience with Uber. It’s not typical for it to just straight up not work and charge your card.

Fiivemacs,

I’ve written them and any company off that doesn’t have a phone number just because of that experience. It wasn’t a lot of money and I did end up getting it back, but that’s as the day I realized if a company is mostly if not all internet facing (no phone or chance at human intervention), then they have a hard time getting me to even consider being a customer.

I’m sure Uber is fine and I don’t blame any drivers (obviously). It’s just crappy flaw in all communication is via internet.

bionicjoey, (edited )

I say this with no malice or ill will toward you, but rather simply as an involuntary biological response to reading your comment: “Okay Boomer”

Seriously, there are a lot of reasons to hate Uber and say it’s an awful company. But them not having a phone number is certainly not one of them.

cm0002,

Right lol, a phone number doesn’t mean shit. I’ve had plenty of horrible customer service from companies with even multiple regional phone numbers and I’ve had plenty of phenomenal customer service experiences from email/chat only places lmao

Fiivemacs,

At least you can contact the company when you don’t have an account…

Every try getting a hold of a company that has no phone/email support, you have no account and somehow had fraud on your card from said company?

Login to get help…oh wait

Check out twitter for support, again, no account.

It’s bullshit. Companies cannot be held accountable if you can’t get a hold of them.

cm0002,

Yea, OK Boomer lmao

I just went to the Twitter support page (logged out) and was able to find multiple ways to submit a variety support tickets.

Every try getting a hold of a company that has no phone/email support, you have no account and somehow had fraud on your card from said company?

Why would you need to? Just report the fraud to your bank, it’ll prob result in a charge back, but if it’s a company you have no business with, then what does that matter.

It’s bullshit. Companies cannot be held accountable if you can’t get a hold of them.

LMFAO you’re not holding any company accountable through their customer service, if accountability is what you want then you either need a lawyer, be a lawyer, see if the media will report on it or have enough of a social media presence that your complaints will be loudly publicly heard

This is the most boomer comment I’ve seen in a long time, bet you also say “If you need a job, just print out your resume and ask to speak to the manager at their location” lololol

Fiivemacs,

For sure it is…

You’re defrauded by a company you ATTEMPTED to do business with.

They force you to make an account to get help. Can’t create account because ‘email used’, try forgot password, can’t because account doesn’t exist.

The fuck you do now? Call or mail the company or show up in person.

Oh wait, the company has no physical locations. They want you to sign up. Repeat process above of getting fucked around

Email general support, won’t help without logging in.

Try to call, oh shit they are too cheap to have a phone.

It’s a problem…sad you can’t see if because you haven’t been fucked by it yet

Lol company taking advantage of customers in a monopoly outraged that another company was able to take advantage of them better and now it’s not a monopoly. Not rushing to defend anyone here.

ILikeBoobies,

Yes they would also like to avoid regulations and not have to pay for their vehicles

That doesn’t justify the other side

cm0002,

That doesn’t justify the other side

Never said it did, but at the very least when Uber said they would have a car there, the car was there. When their app says it’ll cost X for the ride, I paid X.

Too many cab experiences where a “Yea man, prob 20$” turned into a 60$ ride because “the meter says what the meter says”. Too many cab experiences where a car was supposed to be at my location “in 15 minutes” an hour ago. Among other crap they pull

nova_ad_vitum,

Don’t be fooled, they’re textbook playing the victim, if anything they’re just pissed they didn’t have the idea first to do what Uber/Lyft are doing

They still haven’t really done it. Taxi apps that exist are mostly shit. They didn’t want to have the idea first, they just wanted their status quo to persist indefinitely just like any other degenerate sector with an artificial supply constraint.

Prezhotnuts,

It’s interesting to see what damages get awarded.
