My Fitbit Charge 5 took a dive (again.) I really enjoy the tracking features of Fitbit, like their sleep and other metrics. But, I'm growing ever frustrated at their devices.

No way I'm paying for Whoop. I'm considering a Garmin but I only know of them as having great hardware.

Does Garmin provide similar features to Fitbit?

@mglaman If you REALLY want a deep-dive in comparing Garmin to Fitbit (and other options) you can start here, and then venture out into individual product reviews https://www.dcrainmaker.com/product-comparison-calculator

DC Rainmaker tends to be more sport-focused, but he puts out VERY thorough reviews of different fitness/tracking devices and their analysis ecosystems.

@mglaman I migrated from Fitbit to Polar when I moved from general lifestyle training to more active fitness tracking, but Polar seems to have stagnated. Garmin is the most likely next step for me, though I've been keeping my eye on Coros and Suunto.

@DaleTrexel I've been slowly edging out of Fitbit's target market and more into Garmins. But they nail all of the other parts.

Thanks for the link, I'll look it over

@mglaman I've fallen out of touch with his reviews since leaving Twitter, but it looks like he's been keeping busy.

His reviews of sleep tracking on all platforms has been that it's difficult to compare because there's no agreed baseline/standards, so it's hard to tell how Garmin compares.

For fitness watches, the focus seems to be on training guidance and especially tracking recovery post-workout the last few years. https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2023/07/garmin-adds-training-readiness-morning-report-to-instinct-2-in-new-beta.html

@mglaman With Garmin there's a billion different devices and variants, depending on your needs.

That's one reason I haven't switched yet: too much work to get up to date with latest options & decide what to invest in. Especially since my Polar Vantage V keeps on working.

@DaleTrexel The different devices is kind of nice:

  • Bike computer
  • HR monitor
  • Watch

Seamlessly connected. Whereas Fitbit is a closed HR monitor and doesn't integrate with bike computers.

So I am at the tipping point of moving on purely for advanced cycling purposes.

@mglaman Yeah, Fitbit's attitude about being the one and only HR sensor was one of my main reasons for moving away: wrist-based optical HR is horrible for some activities (interval training & cold weather sports, for me). I wanted something I could pair with a chest strap.

I've been using a Karoo2 for bike computer. It's Android based and they're constantly adding/improving features based on user feedback, which is great! But also difficult to keep up with the constant changes at times.

@DaleTrexel I was looking at Karoo. I was also considering Wahoo, since my goal is to get their line of trainer equipment
