I’m not 100% sure of this yet, but it seems that the new Tailscale iOS app might support custom control planes, which will let us use it without relying on Tailscale’s infrastructure at all. Tailscale itself is really unsuited to the traditional Hamachi-style usage, you can’t really make a network among friends without paying an arm and a leg, doubly so considering that you can’t sign up with a username and password and you need a Google / Github / corporate account. If you have a server, Headscale solves this. It’s an open source replacement of their control plane that you can run yourself, but until now, iOS didn't let you connect to anything besides the official one.
