Looking for houses is probably the most stressful activity I've ever done in my life. And I've done it too many times already. Tired.

Fuck all the rent market and landlords.

Shitty holes for too damn much money where even they wouldn't want to live. 🤮

@catarinac it's so bad that it's becoming impossible to find anything that one would be comfortable living in paying less than 800€ in the whole country.

I'm focusing on Lisbon, but I have already things opened in Entroncamento, Coimbra, Leiria, etc.

Lisbon is like 1200€ for 30m2 T0. Other places, even Setúbal be like 900€ T1 50m2...

    This shit is crazy everywhere.

    I wanna cry 😭.

@vascorsd Yes, Lisbon is pretty crazy, I had a look a while back and this was one of the cheapest I found

@catarinac yeah, those 25m2 are like the size of my current living room, but for the whole house.

    It's all so sad.

Years ago cheaper areas like Arroios or similar had some interesting things, but now there's nothing cheap anymore and it's not like all those houses suddenly became top quality houses.

There should be a lot more variety taking into account the quality of the houses that exist.

@vascorsd I know it's crazy, now there they have a lot of airbnbs in basements where you barely see the sun ...

    tyil,

@vascorsd I'm only familiar with the housing market in the Netherlands, but I hear the housing market is shit all across western Europe from friends.

Small, badly kept, old apartments going for ridiculous monthly rent prices. Your monthly costs could be lower, if only you made more money to get a loan to buy a house, but to make a real shot at that, you kinda need to be with someone else...

Landlords are a pox on society, especially as they aren't taxed at all in the Netherlands. It's free money they get for being more wealthy than other people. And they gladly abuse this privilege.

@tyil I hear that Netherlands may be one of the most expensive markets. It must be scary looking for houses there.

Here we kinda are fucked, since banks don't finance houses 100% it's becoming impossible to own one, since you going to need ~50k € up front for even trying to buy the cheapest houses, money that most people don't have.

The rents have increased so much that it not only affects the capital city but also the rural countryside where cheaper places are above minimum wage already.

    tyil,

@vascorsd It may be the most expensive in absolute terms, but I'm not sure if that's also true when compared to the average income here.

When I was looking for a new place after my breakup, the rent prices were around 1400-1600, either for OK-ish apartments, or old and badly insulated row homes. I was looking in big cities, small villages, any place I could reasonably find, being able to work from home gives quite a bit of options there. And still, there was nothing for a reasonable price.

I was able to get a raise and just meet the bar to get a mortgage for a home, and those payments are 1000 per month now. If I didn't have a boss at the time willing to make a sacrifice for me, I would be paying a lot more, to get a lot less. I wouldn't even be able to save to look forward to buying a house later on in life.

I can only imagine how much harder this is for younger people just starting out in a job, they have no way to demand more pay just so they can move out of their parents' home.

@tyil I don't want to imagine the struggle for the younger ones. At current living costs if I would need to go to university now and rent a room in another city I just wouldn't be able to and wouldn't have gone to the university.

More and more we see people living more time in their parents houses because that's the only way possible to survive nowadays. It's crazy.

@vascorsd Rents have increased mostly due to interest rates, as many landlords have mortgages on the places they rent. Interest rates are up due to national banks attempting to stop inflation.

Not financing 100% of the cost is good, as it's a filter for bad borrowers. This is set by national banks, i.e. by law, to prevent housing bubbles.

The problem with many European cities is that they are static. Overcrowding & strict regulations don't yield cheap housing.
