alex,

Editing a Google Doc with track changes on the iPad is trash. I went back to using the browser. Is this the best strategy, or do y'all power users have a better option?

JeffreyJDean,

Copy-editor/typesetter here. My advice for collaborative writing is to keep the formatting as simple as possible while you are working. Tidy it up when you’re done. It will prevent a lot of unnecessary distraction. Markdown can be useful in this respect.

WordsByWesInk,

@alex
The web experience with tracked changes is horrible, but it's infinitely better than the apps. My "better option" is using Word, but that's not always feasible with shared docs or if the keeping the formatting intact is important.

louisbouchard,

@alex I'd give Pages app a try. On macOS it's very good. Not as easy to share & collaborate as Google Doc, but better at formatting and creating polished docs.

sukrit,

@alex 😭 was planning to get an iPad for that. I’m reading a Google doc with a heading in the header and the iPhone app doesn’t show it to me ☠️

alex,

@sukrit it's very bad for collaborative editing.

fbobraga,

@alex iThings are expensive trash ^^

@alex I just co-authored a book in Google Docs and this toot is extremely triggering

alex,

@kjhealy I'm about to cowrite a book in Google Docs and I'm about to be traumatized

@alex @kjhealy That sounds horrifying.

catherineomega,

@alex @kjhealy I’m 50K words into a book in Google Docs and seriously contemplating MAKING MY OWN TOOL. Like, believe me, I am completely aware how bonkers a “solution” that would be, and yet…

kjhealy,

@catherineomega @alex I wrote a bunch of shell scripts and a Makefile to deal with getting it out of Google Docs and into various other formats.

alex,

@kjhealy @catherineomega ah I love this.

@alex my general strategy is to always use the browser instead of any app on iPad. It is nearly always a better experience because iOS apps seem to always forget that non-phone iOS users exist.

@alex I find Google Docs website on my iPad to be vastly more useful than the app, which I uninstalled. One major problem for me: I often want several docs open at once.

@stshank @alex same!

@alex wish I did, it's DOG SLOW as your doc gets big, so painful >.<

@alex nope, that’s the best strategy. It’s like no one has ever used the app, and it’s been that way for at least four years (as long as I’ve owned an iPad).
