diygene,

https://www.mercurynews.com/2023/09/01/it-seems-like-everyone-has-covid-19-heres-why-this-wave-is-probably-worse-than-official-data-suggests/

“We wanted to make it like flu because that was easier, but it’s never going to be like flu,” Birx said, explaining that Covid-19 comes in more frequent waves, makes people sicker, kills more people and can have longer-term complications such as long Covid. “So let’s just all agree it’s not flu. It will never be flu. Following it and surveying for it like we do for flu will never be adequate in this country.”

jennyzilliac,

@diygene

Curious if you are going back to masking? (Or maybe you never stopped masking?)

It's interesting to think about the important role our own life's anecdotal evidence plays in our decision making.

A guy who has done some fixit work for our family was out of commission for two years from long COVID. Will I put my mask back on? I haven't yet, but I'm seriously considering it.

diygene,

@jennyzilliac I mask indoors with crowds, like at the grocery. I had stopped, but started up again a couple of weeks ago when numbers started trending upwards again

My brother-in-law currently has it (though is doing fine now with Paxlovid), which supports my earlier choice

I'm not sure if it's at the level yet to make me change plans for indoor events that are coming up (e.g., some author events at the Oakland Library), but I'm internally debating that now

jennyzilliac,

@diygene

I think I'll grit my teeth and do it. Once in the habit, it's not big deal at all. But getting back in the habit is hard.

diygene,

@jennyzilliac Between having had COVID once (back when Paxlovid was first becoming available; I didn't get any, but my wife did and recovered quickly) and hearing about the effects of long COVID, it didn't take much to convince me

garmcveyrussell,

@diygene @jennyzilliac I had relaxed my indoor masking to only when it’s crowded, like at the supermarket. But now I’m doing it regardless. And now I’m squeamish about indoor restaurants again. Sigh.

diygene,

@garmcveyrussell @jennyzilliac To be fair, my squeamishness about indoor restaurants and never let up. We're eating out this week for a mini-celebration, but specifically a place where we can sit outside

shawrd773,

@diygene @garmcveyrussell @jennyzilliac I haven’t been unmasked indoors with strangers since 2020. And barely so with friends and extended family. It took me 2 years to clear my 2020 infection; I have no confidence that another infection would go well for me.

jennyzilliac,

@shawrd773 @diygene @garmcveyrussell

I'm so sorry you got clobbered so hard. Thank you for sharing your experience. It will help motivate me to take precautions.

I still have not had COVID, and family members have had extremely mild cases with no apparent after effects.
