Sadly the very same goes for so many artist/designer friends, peers & orgs... 😫 Cutting the cord is hard, but sometimes absolutely necessary!
Maybe it's time (again) for some deeper introspection, in light of recent events (potential active involvement in Saudi human rights abuses, ADL blaming, anti-democatric incitements)...

Only one question: Where do you draw your line?

boringold,

@toxi It's frustrating to see that some bubbles just stay on X, despite Musk's agenda. In parts because they don't care, in parts because they might even agree (at least I suspect most crypto bros to be secret admirers of his bullshit).

I try to focus on Mastodon in my write–ups, but the lack of an audience makes putting in the work really hard. I also miss all the positive community building happening on X between artists and collectors that I can't find here.

boringold,

@toxi I've spent some minutes thinking about what I miss most on Mastodon, and I think it is the enthusiasm about digital art that the community shows elsewhere. The joy of discovering and sharing artworks and artists and seeing how they interact with each other's work.

Here, it's mostly about tech, social problems, and amateur fan art, but all in a rather sterile and unemotional way (except for plenty of anger about the bad stuff happening outside of the Fediverse).

@boringold @toxi Maybe time for a instance for specific digital art?
Also fediverse but more image sharing focused.

@boringold I hear ya, but also learned from my opensource projects that it's often (always?!) mainly falling on the "early adopters", those who're seeking change and those who have an actual interest in deepening/furthering actual social exchange about certain topics/projects to put in extra-large effort to encourage building a community. Social inertia is real, so the initial spark of energy has to be immense. Be the change!

On the other hand, re: "community" I also very much agree with some of the sentiments and points raised here: https://yakshav.es/thoughts-on-community/

Finally, personally, as much as I miss hearing from some people still over there, leaving Twitter behind has been the healthiest decision of the past few years...

boringold,

@toxi I really appreciate putting the idea of "community" in context. Thanks for the link!

In the end, it's not about what you call a group of people you're sharing your favourite hobby with, it's about not being able to stay in touch with them.

Rebuilding the Twitter experience will most likely not be possible, and frankly, I don't want social interaction to feel like work. I don't know if Mastodon will ever feel as fun and easy–going as Twitter did when it was still "good".

@boringold @toxi my choice, months ago, has been to embrace Mastodon as my main social outlet, and slowly let the Twitter account die. But I confess I rather often go there to check what gen artists are doing, and sometimes I post a comment or a picture. Btw just checked in to see how frequently, and twitter analytics is broken (missing data, wrong statistics ...). I guess incompetence is drawing the line for me ...

@toxi It just came to my mind that Google shuts down products while I close accounts :-) Deviant Art, Xing, LinkedIn, FotoCommunity, Ipernity, Flickr, Google, Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Twitter... some of the ones I remember. It can feel exciting like jumping from a high rock into the sea. Liberating too. At the end nothing bad happened. Actually, I'm less angry. Now I meet offline, use e-mail and chat. Caring less about leaving a trace, focusing more on the present. #quitter
