I’ll miss lightning. It’s physically a better cable connector than usb-c. I’ll also miss the predictability of lightning. With usb you have to first make sure it’s usb-c, then worry about if it’s usb 2 or usb 3 or thunderbolt compatible. And then worry about power delivery abilities. And some usb-c cables only do power delivery, no data. Compared to lightning this is not simpler. My label maker will be working overtime going forward to make sure the cables are clearly labeled, since just by looking at them there’s no way to know anything about if they’ll work for you or not.
@gabek I am using USB c for years now and never had issues. I can charge any device anywhere in the flat and its so convenient I don't want to go back to proprietary plugs.
But I also don't have a single Apple device, so never used lightning.
@gabek I am always buying the cables from that one company where I know they are good and will be around for long because they do not instantly break when I take them for a trip. But that's indeed something that took me some time to get sorted.
@gabek I agree on the connector side, Lightning was always my favorite connector to actually plug in. You can connect a Lightning phone blind and from the weirdest angles possible and the rounded design would always perfectly guide the plug into the connector.
With USB C you have to be way more precise. From the looks of it, they at least tried to do something similar with the C connector, but we‘ll have to see how it goes…
@gabek I’m going to miss it too. Easier to clear debris out of a lightning socket. Cable roulette was still a problem with lighting though, cheap knockoffs are everywhere and the official cable is relatively expensive
@lkhrs I can see that. I’ve purchased off brands of lightning cables and hadn’t had any issues, but at least I’m confident it either works or it doesn’t. Unlike usb where it might kind of work, but slowly, or not supply power, or maybe not enough power, or whatever weird variables that aren’t clear until it’s too late and you device dies even though you had it plugged in.
@lkhrs@gabek They'll be cheaper now! 😄 Millions of Lightning phones will continue to be perfectly usable for years to come. The compulsive upgraders are a noisy minority.
