Maybe #Monal 6.0 (when it is done) will solve this.
There is a Beta available in Testflight but it currently only allows audiocalls from Monal Beta to Monal Beta.
As far as I know the release should be compatible with other #xmpp apps.
The XMPP iOS situation is getting better but it is not perfect.
@neil What do you consider to be the "normal problems"?
VoIP traffic is fairly lightweight - 50 small packets/second in each direction - but it is sensitive to latency and variation in latency (jitter or that new phrase that the IETF uses in lieu of "jitter").
The most damaging network impact for some implementations is when the packets arrive out of their original order. Some implementations fail or get very confused.
For fun at the Interop shownet Labs I once did a toy that played with VoIP traffic. It would inject phrases into the stream.
I also tried extend that toy to watch a VoIP stream, notice occurrences of the word "not" and would block those packets. I didn't have the hardware horsepower to do that, but I think that that would be possible to do today.
