I dreamed I got recruited by the Hank Scorpio of private military contractors, who recruited mostly from the poor and marginalized communities. The pay was $70/hour for training plus full benefits. I was in the top of women athletically so got picked for physical and combat training. I was still a writer in this universe, apparently, and a man introduced me to a fan of one of my books.
@gwynnion For some reason I thought of the bricked wall behind the bathroom window that was to be the escape route in "Le Femme Nikita" The description of the recruiting methods also had me thinking "use up those nobody cares about, who cares if they die."

true but this is a Hank Scorpio analog so it's probably more like 'recruit the ones nobody cares about & then treat them with respect because they'll die for you in gratitude.'
(Not saying it's still not manipulative as hell.)
@FeralRobots@gwynnion I'm not familiar with Hank Scorpio. I plead too much interesting technology to read about. Then dream up and design new technologies.
@gwynnion@FeralRobots SImpsons. That explains why I don't know. Never watched the show. All the segments I've seen might end up totaling a normal a couple show lengths.
BTW, I joke about being a pop culture illiterate. It's very true. On the flip side I dream circuit designs, electromagnetic devices, and ever changing light patterns. If I wake up dreaming of people, those dreams are prophetic, but only related to major events in my life.
@Eka_FOOF_A@FeralRobots I haven't watched "The Simpsons" in years. It hasn't been good in a long time anyway. But I'll admit it occupies a prominent space in my head and my sense of humor.
@gwynnion@FeralRobots Kinda like Saturday Night Live. I grew up watching the original cast. It's been downhill since. For me: Monty Python, Benny Hill, Dr Who, HHTTG, and Star Trek(original) underline much of my head space. That was before I just stopped watching TV. Many of the people who supported me most as a child and teen were British expats. They introduced me to their favorite shows, and by chance the local PBS station had them on Fri and Sat nights when I babysat for their kids.
@gwynnion@FeralRobots A friend introducing me to Rogue got me watching and reading the X-Men. I ended up also feeling an affinity to Wolverine.
About a few months before she introduced me to Rogue, I'd all of a sudden felt scared for her. I didn't have her phone number, so I logged onto ISCABBS, where we both had accounts, and asked if she was OK? Somebody called her, interrupting a rape. Her BF/rapist ran away. That incident spooked lots of people, and I was looked at very different after.
@gwynnion@FeralRobots Note, she never was a close friend, just somebody I'd been in the presence of a few times over late night coffee and waffles and attended some of the same parties. Many years later I found out we were related many generations back.
@gwynnion@FeralRobots I'm glad I asked on the BBS, even if it did kill my social life. He was relatively popular in the geek crowd that built and ran ISCBBS, but I didn't know him. I was in the concerned user crown that built the policies and policy board to get the BBS the rules and stability it needed to survive as part of the UI Student Computer Association.
