It's Friday, so that means another "Tale From Tech Support" on my blog. Enjoy!

@popey
When you support or teach people:

  • Always accentuate the positive.

  • Never assign blame.

In your case I would say something like "Ah, the password input box is really finicky sometimes. I always have to be careful when typing into it or it gets it wrong." Or just "Oh, it probably failed to match the passwords. If that happens you can try typing it again."

As in, the computer easily makes a mistake when typing a password, not I (or her).

@popey

Susan should consider herself lucky that Morgan Freeman & Angelina Jolie didn't recruit you for their ring of assassins.

Also that you're a good person capable of rising above that kind of behaviour.

@popey I remember in a computing magazine in the 90 an article where a reporter shadowed a field tech support person.
Main takeaway was if the person was a fault they were usually more horrible to deal with while if it was a genuine technical problem they were more relaxed.

Did my time doing phone support around then and definitely rings true.

@popey "(I still remember to this day that her actual password was indeed ‘daisy’)"

During a tech support call with a CEO (which was not my job), he revealed that his password was "arsenalfc".

@popey I don't have many tales from tech support as that's never really been my role, but there was one workplace where the sales staff were all-male and incredibly stereotypical salesmen and seemed to spend all day playing practical jokes on each other. I was called up to help one guy who had had his entire desktop themed to be Teletubby based in his absence over lunchtime including every time he opened a program it would bast out "Eh-oh!"

@grifferz Hah! I actually miss that kind of pranking in the office. Although I suspect it might be called "bullying" now :S

@popey I had my bash prompt turned into

C:>

while I was away, and I was reponsible for making someone's IRC client prepend "omg" and append "lol" to every line they sent

But at least we'd fix our own colleagues systems if our pranks got out of hand…

filviu,

@popey @grifferz one of the best pranks we used to play was screenshot the desktop, move all files, folders and shortcuts from the desktop in a folder away from the desktop and set the screenshot as wallpaper. Then, watch the victim doubleclick around and reboot to fix the "stuck" system.
