From March 2022:

> Aerosol transmission was never merely a medical question.

> Accepting it, as Dr. John Conly, an infectious disease specialist advising the WHO on its Covid guidelines, told Reuters that first summer, “would affect our entire way of life.”

> Government, Chapin allowed, should still provide clean water and regulate hygiene in dairies and slaughterhouses. The most important task of the public health profession, however, was controlling outbreaks of communicable disease through laboratory work and data collection. Otherwise, responsibility for disease prevention must be left to individuals. “It was a common saying of sanitarians of years ago that for every death from typhoid fever someone ought to be hung,” whether it be “the city councilman, the health officer, or the landlord,” Chapin wrote. “It is more in accord with present day knowledge and modern conditions to say that if a man has typhoid fever it is his own just punishment for sanitary sins.”

“Community action cannot check the disease,” he wrote in the Dallas Morning News, but “the individual can do something to protect himself.” (Chapin)

Looks like the central capitalist law: fight the collective action, as usual. Happens that is the only way out of it.

@flavia_feijo_epi right? As far as I can tell, the entirety of our public health response hasn't progressed beyond what he said over a century ago. The same ignorant problems as ever and the same ignored solutions.

@trendless
If we had approached Smallpox with the same blase attitude that we used during the original Covid vaccine rollout, we could all expect to get smallpox once or twice in a lifetime. So things are much worse than they were 100 years ago. At least they wanted to improve the ID landscape back then.

@noyes @flavia_feijo_epi we already climbed that mountain, no more career-hay to be made, got bored, decided to try something else, 🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦

That's the resignation targeted by the Big Money propaganda, the same way strongly used against climate activists, tobacco fighters etc.

@flavia_feijo_epi @noyes I was thinking more of the myriad public health professionals feeling that way than the average nobody who is fighting for change. Maybe the former is targeted by the same groups though, as thought leaders

We need to make a strike. To survive. Together.

@flavia_feijo_epi @noyes I've been on strike for years now, more or less. I was hoping the healthcare pros would walk out when it became clear their admins dgaf about whether they lived or died. I'm not sure what it'll take to general strike at this point, but I do believe that it's eminently doable to pull together and [locally] support each other in doing so. If only we can get our peers on all sides to realize fighting each other is how none of our problems get resolved. But like you said, there's big money keeping us at each other's throats.

And will be more.

@trendless

Same intent: more power over us.

At the beginning of the pandemic, there was a strong hope that we could protect each other collectively. Musicians playing by our windows to give us stenghtness.. We were together then, caring each other. I didn't forget.

And a lot of money was spent on propaganda of You Do You and so on. It's working!

@flavia_feijo_epi 🎯🎯🎯

It really isn't "ignorant" problems so much as "malicious intentions".
