Art post reply peeves

"oh cool, is that a filter?" fuck off
"oh cool, is that AI?" fuck all the way off
"I can't believe you made this" well better believe it since I did, also fuck off
"was this made on drugs?" inspired by drug trips is a thing. actually made on hallucinogenic drugs? if it's more complicated than a crayon drawing? fuck off.

OTOH

"how did you make this?" yes please
"what technique did you use for X?" more more more
"any pointers?" a-ok
"can you teach me?" never hurts to ask

JamesWidman,

@rygorous

re drugs: yes. You'll hear similar comments about Jimi Hendrix, but then you actually start reading about his process, and... surprise! It turns out he was kind of a workaholic: always practicing, always experimenting with technique, with different instruments, with audio technology...

So it's really annoying when someone tries to reduce the source of his skill & creativity down to drugs (and it happens a lot).

@JamesWidman exactly.

and it's not like this is an uncommon experience. anyone who's ever been at least somewhat more sober than a friend who was drunk, stoned or tripping at the time knows that that's not exactly when they're primed to doing quality work

"did you make this while drunk/stoned/tripping" is not exactly complimenting your work, generally

OTOH, I guess speed can help getting things done (IIRC Lemmy wrote a whole album in night on speed when playing with Sam Gopal, way before Motörhead)

@Doomed_Daniel @JamesWidman Yeah that's why I specifically said hallucinogenic drugs in the OP, which is usually what people mean when they say "was this made on drugs?".

No personal experience with most stimulants beyond caffeine but from what I've seen they don't seem to lead to particularly trippy results. Not until you get into severe sleep deprivation etc. anyhow.

Likewise, painkillers. I've not done visual art while injured and on painkillers but I have written code that way.

it's really not hard.

if someone tells you they made something, unless you have compelling reason to believe otherwise (plagiarism etc.), you believe them, and it's really damn rude to suppose otherwise or minimize their work

that's what it boils down to. work. and if you're curious, ask artists about their work. most love to talk about it. (and it's way less awkward than talking about yourself)

@rygorous also, “talent / gifted” aspect.

@aras @rygorous Plus nothing reinforces how unimportant talent is compared to environment more than parenthood. I can observe my son making leaps of progress laser-focused precisely in the areas where we encourage him, almost in real-time.

I used to dismiss the notion of practice, but I'm now inclined to think that's 80-90% of any skill, really.

@aras finally, paraphrasing ghostbusters:

if someone asks you if you're an artist, you say YES

Fully agree with the practice aspect. I'm a reasonably good long range shooter for my indoor netball teams. Obviously there is some skill because not everyone can do it but when other players ask me how I hit so many shots in a game I tell them it's because I've missed so many in practice

jkaniarz,
@jkaniarz@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aras @rygorous Yes, I’m gifted… with an uncanny ability to practice.

Doomed_Daniel,

@jkaniarz @aras @rygorous
believe me, that is a gift.

allypally,

@aras @rygorous If it wasn’t a teachable skill there would be no point in employing art teachers.
