my September income (= translation sales) was a bit over half of August income

but that came with me:

  • taking it easy for a couple of days after the summer heat (also read as me playing Baldur's Gate 3)
  • looking after the family after partner got covid around Sep 12
  • looking after youngest who got hand/foot/mouth disease and was mostly eating pudding and yogurt for a few days due to a mouth sore

so, pretty decent all-in-all. Partner also doing better 3 weeks later.

@niten translation is getting tough. I’ve had several freelancers get out of the game in the past year, including the best humanities translator I worked with 😭

The stuff that’s still coming with regularity is more technical or clinical (or patents in your case).

@FlockOfCats I feel still money to be made in high-end finance and legal translation which needs to be correct for legal reasons, but there's MT/AI shills trying to capture work on the low end

@niten same for clinical trials / pharma I think.

Physical and formal sciences are mostly now just relying on the fact that the content is so specialized that it’s hard to use MT and not get goop 🫠

@FlockOfCats @niten legal also makes people want to blow their fucking brains out and you need very specific training to be able to do it for... obvious reasons. I will PR legal stuff but that's because I know that not just anyone can do it. 🥰

@ZorritoIV @FlockOfCats I worked at a law firm (as an "english editor" correcting English produced by J lawyers) for a year or maybe I have a weird brain (I do patent translation, so that's probably true) 🧐

@niten @ZorritoIV yeah, legal is weird. I like it (editing translations of it). I don’t do tons of it but we get a little.

I don’t have any special training for it, but yeah, it maybe helps if your brain is wired a little funny 😆. Some of my coworkers can’t do it because they are used to dealing with “is it correct and basically unambiguous for a gentle reader” vs “is it correct and 100% unambiguous for a hostile reader”
