I decided to start listening to podcasts again, and cracked open Overcast, the app I used to use, and noticed a banner ad at the bottom.

As I’ve reached the point where adds make me just irrationally angry, I went to see if there was a version of the app I could buy without ads.

…You have to sign up for a yearly subscription to get rid of ads.

Subscriptions (aka “technofeudalism”) make me angrier than ads. So back to the default Apple app it is. Eff this.

afaik Overcast is just one guy trying to run a small, independent business, with no wealthy investors demanding rapid growth and a 10x return on their startup capital

Still technofeudalism in that case?

If he can't run ads or charge a subscription fee, what should he do?

@jrefior I am perfectly fine with a one-time purchase and paying for major numbered upgrades. Not paying endlessly.

It doesn’t stop being technofeudalism just because it’s one guy doing it instead of a big company.

Genuine question: do app stores enable appmakers to sell version upgrades?

If not, I guess they'd have to publish each version as a separate app? Here's a link to the new one, delete your old one?

Not sure phone platforms and app stores make this payment/business model easy

@jrefior Tweetbot, before they switched to a subscription model, released it as a new app when they did major upgrades. I used to get them before they switched to a subscription model.
