The lapis lazuli gemstone was traditionally linked to deities and royalty. The Sumerian goddess Inanna had a lapis necklace and rod when she entered the underworld, and Egyptian pharaohs also favored lapis jewelry. Ancient Egyptian judges wore lapis talismans of Maat, goddess of truth.
