notthebee,

To people who comment "Ew, I would never buy hardware from Aliexpress 🤮" under my videos.

Respectfully, you're watching a "budget home server" video. You clearly don't have the money to be that squeamish about your hardware.

@notthebee I'm only squeamish/paranoid about things that uses 220V from Ali. 12V and below I'm alright with.

@notthebee not sure which video this is referring to, but I imagine the main concern one would have with buying from aliexpress is the risk getting a wrong or defective part, and I can imagine someone with a tight budget not being able to afford that risk (as in, can't buy another one if the first one turns out to be bad).

But yeah "eww aliexpress" is not a mature way to express such a concern

notthebee,

@wolf480pl Absolutely understand that. But that's the risk that also comes with buying used hardware, and somehow people aren't super squeamish about that (apart from hard drives).

I've seen a lot of people just blindly assume that Aliexpress only sells fake products, cheap knockoffs and things that immediately fall apart after you receive them.

And when it comes to computer hardware, my recurring favorite is "how can I be sure that CCP won't install a high-tech hardware level backdoor into my 180€ NAS motherboard".

@notthebee I've seen people freak out at the idea of buying second-hand GPUs but yeah...
