Gee—today is my lucky day. I've been offered the opportunity to manage $150,000,000 by the Bezos Family Foundation, $50,000,000 from the Zuckerberg Foundation, and $100,000,000 from the Warren Buffet Foundation and the Musk Foundation, plus another $80,000,000 from a dying cancer patient. Of course, I have to use all of that money for philanthropic purposes. Any suggestions on worthy recipients?

@SteveBellovin Internet Pioneers Retirement Fund?

(You’ll have to start it yourself.)

bontchev,

@SteveBellovin I know a guy in Nigeria who really needs the money to bribe the prison guards and get out of jail.

@SteveBellovin Hookers and drugs is the obvious response, although I imagine a few Nigerian princes are a bit short.

@SteveBellovin 1. Pay off school kids meal balance.
2. Fund every food bank.
3. Donate to anti-maga politicians.

A good start.

@SteveBellovin Any orgs dedicated to protecting the biosphere and biodiversity, either at the policy level or grassroots. Usually they will be working and acting locally in specific jurisdictions. In Ontario we have Environmental Defence.

A safe and healthy world requires an interconnected set of issues to be addressed. The environment, human rights (including diversity), culture and the arts, animal welfare, etc: it's all related.

@SteveBellovin Buy homes for the unhoused. Just buy them. Maybe pay the property taxes ahead by a couple of years. Invest in lawsuits against polluters and other companies that actively harm people. Lobby to eliminate the tax exemption for religious organizations.

oclsc,

@SteveBellovin Me. I'm a worthy recipient.

@SteveBellovin Emailing total strangers with random email addresses seems the only equitable way to deal with this windfall.

@SteveBellovin Forward the whole set to some e/acc philanthropic fund who can, if they choose, try to extract the funds from whoever is making these promises. Seems the most likely way to arrange for everyone to get what they deserve...

@SteveBellovin Wow, that’s a rare opportunity! Anything that alleviates poverty would be high on my list, especially efforts to systemically break the cycle of poverty.
