It’s not important to teach your children not to swear. It’s important to teach your children to swear appropriately.

@kierkegaank I had to tell my child off for using "fucking helling" a few years ago as it was obviously grammatically incorrect.

@thomasbeagle damn right! Your child is not a meme dog!

@kierkegaank we took the approach of “adult language” instead of “bad language” and talked about how language has different valid uses in various contexts, and HOW one communicates often says as much as WHAT one communicates.

And now she’s a computational and anthropological linguist in training. So, uh, mission accomplished?

@kierkegaank I read somewhere that swearing is like a condiment: it should be used for emphasis, not as a primary ingredient, and if over-used, it loses its impact. That’s the tack I’ve taken with the kids. No teacher calls so far — well, not about that! 😅

Dwinle,

@kierkegaank Totally agree. Expletives should be used like a sniper’s rifle, accurate and deadly. Not like shotgun pellets that blast indiscriminately and miss the point.

@kierkegaank That's the approach we're taking.

@Mundon Any concerned calls from teachers?
