I’ll go first: Wasn’t thinking & slammed my backpack onto the ground with my unprotected iPad inside. 🎒
@BasicAppleGuy I still have nightmares about it. It was like 2013, my MBP was in clamshell mode on one of those high stands. I was listening to music from some desk speakers, and out of the blue I hear the MacBook fall to the ground. The vibrations from the speakers must've displaced it enough from the stand for it to fall. The chassis was very bent, the super drive broken, but the screen was miraculously fine. It was the first time I destroyed a computer.
@BasicAppleGuy I've only had one iPhone screen damaged. It was our last full day on Kauai and I handed my phone to someone to take a picture of our family. When she handed it back she let go before I had it and it dropped to the sidewalk, shattering from the bottom up. 🤦🏼♂️😱
@BasicAppleGuy My family and I were regulars at the local (non-authorized) iPhone repair shop during the iPhone 3G/3GS era. I was a clumsy teenager and broke two of them that I can remember.
@BasicAppleGuy Cleaning fingerprints off my iPad Pro, it slid off its stupid Apple-designed magnetic leather sleeve with no sides and landed on the concrete floor. Its replacement now permanently lives in a case WITH SIDES.
@BasicAppleGuy oh also - my AirPods Pro and 12 mini got compacted at the town dump when my SF Bags carrying case blended in with the cardboard recycling (along with my wallet and some other goodies!)
@BasicAppleGuy I dropped my bag with not one but two laptops in. Both landed corner down on concrete. Amazingly despite bending the chassis the displays were both fine.
@BasicAppleGuy When my kid was a toddler, he ran to me as I arrived home, arms outstretched, saying “Dadaaaaaaa…" The bag holding my 12" aluminum MacBook slipped off my shoulder onto the tile hallway floor, denting the computer.
I wasn't even mad. What I wouldn't give to go back to when he was that age – he's 19 now.
@BasicAppleGuy A few months after moving to London I got pickpocketed and they made off with my iPhone 5. I had no insurance and not much money so I bought the 5C.
A few days later in work I had to set it on top of a hand dryer in the toilet to use the flashlight as the only source of light - it slipped and fell into the sink. Like a Glass Tony Hawk in a halfpipe, then launched up and out the other side, landing on the floor and completely smashing the front.
Mine was when I moved to SF in late 2005 with nothing but a motorcycle and my beloved MacBook Pro to my name… and promptly broke the hinge on the laptop by bending it back too far. It just dangled loosely all around and I had to prop it up with books or coffee mugs or whatever.
It stayed like that for ages because I was young and broke at my first real job after leaving academia. Friends at the new gig took pity on me and started donating old obsoleted Macs like a G3 tower 😆
@BasicAppleGuy while practicing on the drum kit and having put the iPad up on a stand which in retrospect was placed too close to the crash cymbal I missed the cymbal and hit the iPad instead:
@BasicAppleGuy Went into the wrong locker room at the sauna. When I noticed my mistake (because of the angry face of a woman who came out of the shower), I panically grabbed all my things from the locker and accidentally threw my S2 Watch onto the floor.
@BasicAppleGuy This is all that was left of my grand daughter’s iPad after it was put on the back of a pickup and fell off later on the highway. They when back later and found it. The case survived and is used on the Apple Care replaced iPad.
Circa 1992 using Pro Tools to edit a clients song. Inadvertently discovered the maximum file count on a SCSI hard drive (10,000) after working all night. File system failed and I lost all data.
@BasicAppleGuy Back in 2015 I was riding my bike along a canal path with phone attached to the handlebars. I managed to clip a mooring bollard with my pedal and landed on the phone. I recall it still worked but I did swap it out thanks to Apple care.
@BasicAppleGuy I partially backed a Chevy Tahoe over my 15” PowerBook and my wife’s 13” unibody MacBook Pro.

It was late and one of the kids had gotten sick in the back seat, so I was in the back cleaning up. I’d set the backpack on the ground and then I forgot about it until…
The PowerBook screen broke and it bent the SuperDrive. The MacBook Pro case slightly bent and the glass cracked, but it was otherwise fine.
@BasicAppleGuy It really speaks to the strength of the unibody design, though. The screen was fine, I just had to replace the glass. It’s 13 years old at this time and it still works.
@BasicAppleGuy Went swimming at the beach a good few years ago. After about an hour of swimming noticed something in my pocket and pulled out my iPod Nano 5th gen and EarPods
@BasicAppleGuy the worst damage any of my Apple Products have had are the power button becoming stuck on my 2nd gen iPod touch or the sound becoming muffled on my 1st gen AirPods Pro. Non Apple products however, I had a 1st gen Nexus 7 tablet, I was just about to sell it to my local second hand store when a few days before I had to go into hospital. When I came back home, I realised that the paramedic had stood on the tablet and broke the screen.

Kept my iPhone in a case for almost 3 years, and the case protected my phone beautifully through that time.
The case's rubber lining eventually degraded to the point of uselessness, so I took the phone out of the case. A new iPhone model was coming out in a couple of months, and I figured, I can keep the phone clean without a case for a couple more months before I trade it in for a new model.
And of course, I would drop my phone and shatter the screen. :cate:
