@daringfireball The “screens everywhere” look is dated.

The Tesla aesthetic is that technology should be invisible. The one modestly-sized (by modern standards) screen in a Model Y is the only hint of all the underlying tech.

Having lots of screens is a super-gadgety experience. It makes me think of fiddling with settings and customizing things and other hassles. Such tech demands to be visible and managed and babysat.

@ns @daringfireball The #Tesla Model Y touchscreen is neither “invisible" nor “modestly sized.” It's a 15.4-inch eyesore of a tablet floating in front of the dashboard and wider than the steering wheel. It's the epitome of a distracting gadget that demands to be fiddled with.

@mjgardner @daringfireball Like you I don’t want a distracting gadget experience in my car. New CarPlay will make that problem worse.

But Tesla’s screen really is modestly sized, even if it’s still too big. Take a look:

@ns @daringfireball The #Tesla touchscreen isn’t integrated with the dashboard. It literally sticks out and there is no steering wheel instrument cluster. You have to take your eyes off the road just to monitor your speed!

The 2024 #CarPlay instrument cluster is emphatically not a touchscreen. You don't fiddle with it, and it's in your line of sight while driving.

The alternative to your “screens everywhere is dated" is not "one unsafe eyesore of a screen.”
