Can anyone recommend a good, accessible (to students) reading on tech hype cycles? Not, ideally, a specific case, but a more general treatment of the phenomenon

@inquiline @sts also, Devon Powers "On Trend" cracks open a lot of the hidden mechanics of hype (in tech and elsewhere) https://www.press.uillinois.edu/books/?id=p084690

@inquiline @sts this is a great talk on hype cycles that gives a great metaphor of pioneers, settlers, and town planners that has really helped me think about tech adoption: https://youtu.be/9zc4DSTRGeM

Here is the blog post the speaker gets it from, but I find the talk more helpful than the post: https://blog.gardeviance.org/2012/06/pioneers-settlers-and-town-planners.html

petersibley,

@inquiline @sts @kissane , @kdriscoll might have some references handy .

@inquiline Good question, listening for other records.

Just because it's a timely fit: yesterday, @pluralistic put up a blog post about the AI hype and relates it to other recent hypes.
