As I’ve got some downtime away from work, I’m spending a bit of time overhauling my https://obsidian.md setup, and a couple of things come to mind.

  1. How long before they add AI as a feature? These vast PKBs (Personal Knowledge Bases) people have set up for themselves would lend well to asking an AI questions to retrieve information. Not sure how feasible it is given the horsepower needed to run AI locally and the privacy of people’s PKBs.

@heliomass It’s unlikely that they’re going to add AI themselves. They’re very transparent about what they are building with. For example, with their public road map and guiding principles.

A lot of other people are actually experimenting with this with some really nice results. Haven’t had any need for it myself though. Check this: https://github.com/zatevakhin/obsidian-local-llm

The syncing is horrible with iCloud just because of iCloud. Been there and went back to Obsidian Sync.

heliomass,

@geffrey Yes, I agree. There's definitely too many privacy concerns with AI at the moment. It's probably not a bad thing they're steering clear of such things.

heliomass,
  1. Whichever way you look at it, the mobile app doesn’t cut it. And that’s even ignoring the onerous iCloud syncing issues and the memory requirements which cause the app to quickly get shunted from memory. Given the database is pure Markdown, I’m wondering whether there’s a golden opportunity for a minimal iPhone app for Obsidian vaults which would allow for basic editing, searching and viewing.

natejohnston,

@heliomass I use Working Copy with excellent results on my git-synced obsidian repos, with its excellent git support and markdown editor built in.

heliomass,

@natejohnston Thanks, I've been hearing good things about Working Copy!

@heliomass As for alternative apps, there is iA Writer, Drafts, Taio, Bear.

in some of these apps, you can actually open your vault. For example, I use iA Writer for everything on mobile.

heliomass,

@geffrey Thanks, that's a killer tip. I have IA Writer, but I'd not tried it with my Obsidian vault. It immediately listed all the tags right away, which was impressive. Going to try it out for a while!

@geffrey @heliomass Whoa. I've not considered this. While VIEWING notes on the iPhone is fine with the default app, I'm not a fan of writing on iOS.

Geffrey are you able to create NEW notes via iA Writer too?

geffrey,

@AnthonyBaker @heliomass Oh yea. It works flawlessly. And wikilinking works too! However, in iA writer it won’t show an autocomplete. As far as I know.

heliomass,

@geffrey @AnthonyBaker iA had just gained pride of place on my first homescreen in place of Obsidian. The fact the wiki links work as well is incredible.

Sirnesto,

@geffrey @AnthonyBaker @heliomass does this workflow require opening the obsidian app to get it to sync? (Assuming using obsidian sync) or do you make changes in the files and the let it merge conflicts later?

geffrey,
@geffrey@pkm.social avatar

@Sirnesto @AnthonyBaker @heliomass You’ll have to open the Obsidian app to sync, yea.

Yet, I haven’t experienced any merge conflicts. 🧐 Which is strange now I think about it.

Sirnesto,

@geffrey @AnthonyBaker @heliomass their sync is a pretty solid service if it’s set up properly LOL so actually good to hear it had handled merges with no problems!

heliomass,

@Sirnesto @geffrey @AnthonyBaker iA Writer has been working pretty well for me! Sadly they’ve not fixed the issue with the Obsidian iOS app yet, but to be honest iA Writer is a simpler UI on a phone screen.

ro,

@heliomass Have you tried 1Writer in conjunction with your iCloud vault?

heliomass,

@ro Yes! Someone else also recommended this, and my word, it's a better world.
