So if I've downloaded a 13GB full-install package, why does the install process need two hours of flat-out full network bandwidth to do the install? What was the point of the 13gig download.

Multiple stalls dogging me in updating an older macbook in various ways.

Last attempt was best, got to 41sec remaining but then it tried to turn into a drone – full fans going.

At next peek it showed that peaceful rainbow cloud image and nothing else on screen. Left like that for 30 min just in case, finally gave up and restarted to see it was still on the old OS (Big Sur).

Trying a Big Sur update - maybe that'll create a happier starting place, so trying that.

Stubborn machine this one.

@ottaross are they supported versions? Are you using OpenCore Legacy Patcher?

ottaross,

@jbwharris Just using the off-the-shelf installer from Apple, so no 3rd party stuff, nor weird patches.

Isn't that the supposed to be the type of thing that is supposed to happen to Windows users and why people pay more for Apple/Mac machines.

@the5thColumnist I was thinking of those years of doing WinPC upgrades and the dozens of restarts always involved. Glad I didn't have that battle at least.

Cracked the failing-upgrade challenge by instead doing a minor upgrade the OS I was trying to replace first, then moving up after that. Must've been something wonky in that rev of BigSur.

I got both old and new machines into the final rev of Monterey, and then could make the migration work, which was the goal of the endeavor in the first place. It failed miserably in initial attempts. A long process but glad to finish it all.

    @Nerdfest one of those problems that make you stew on it, and occasionally try another idea later. You'll crack it at some point.

    @ottaross @Nerdfest

    I find Ubuntu upgrades so frequently go awry that I find it easier to back up my data, then just do a new instal of the latest distro and reimport my data

    A pain in the ass, but honestly less hassle that the hours of yak-shaving whatever is going wrong with my upgrade attempt 😂

    Well done!

    And yep, I too run Ubuntu on a 2011 Thinkpad T420

    total beast of a machine, I wrote about it here (free link): https://clivethompson.medium.com/the-laptop-that-wont-die-0c478c3fe46c?sk=dc587d3647aa02107f8b447e01d095f9

    droyls,

    @ottaross surely if you have a full-install package then the install could be done completely offline and no network bandwidth involved?

    ottaross,
    @ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

    @droyls That's what I would've thought - I tried disconnecting the network during one round, and it killed the install.

    I started the process over without network and 20min in it said "you need a network connection to do the install."

    I'm sure you could at one time do an off-line install of macOS, but apparently that's no more.

    Makes you wonder. 13 Gb. When any Linux installer (full DVD) is around 3-4 Gb.
    Literally it needs the network to check for licences and download updates.

    ottaross,
    @ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

    @edgarmtoro I could see that - a few peeps out to check licenses. Maybe without network it could finish up but require a quick network interaction to validate the install perhaps.

    droyls,

    @ottaross it should be possible but with some wriggles! See webpage: Can I Reinstall macOS Without Internet? Is It Possible? [with Alternative Method] https://www.easeus.com/computer-instruction/reinstall-macos-without-internet.html

    ottaross,
    @ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

    @droyls Oh yes - the bootable installer method. I saw that when I was searching on the same topic. Might have to resort to that.

    The progress is going quicker on my latest try. Still lots of network accesses but ticking down through a 1hr process more predictably.
