Here’s my list. It’s subjective, I’m not particularly stringent about criteria, and there’s not rhyme nor reason to my choice of categories.

There are four (unless I add more as the day wears on) categories, each will get its own toot.

“Best” means “best to me.”

(last category) Best Tech

Clarification: this is best tech I purchased in 2023.

Winner: the Toto Washlet SW3084 toilet seat. The tech has come along way since our last washlet we bought a decade ago. The carbon odor filtration is especially welcome in an old home without bathroom extraction fans.

Runner up: 15” M2 MacBook Air. Yes, my MBA came in second to a toilet seat.

They have a commonality: both surfaces achieve almost absolute zero with their power off.

#BestOf2023 Best TV Series

It’s not exactly a 2023 series, and I’d make the argument that the 2022 season was better; however, #StarTrekStrangeNewWorlds is my best TV series.

#StarTrek has lost its way a bit in the Discovery Era, but #STSNW is a massively welcome course correction.

#Picard season 3 was pretty good, but someone turn on some damn lights on your spaceships before OSHA shuts you down!

category Best Movie.

Keep your Barbies and your Oppenheimers, was best film of the year.

With a budget of just $15 million, this film makes a mockery of the last decade of Hollywood’s bloated, over-long, soulless, crappy CGI films.

This is a film that tells a poignant story AND has a big freakin’ monster stomping Tokyo.

category “Best book.”

I don’t actually catalog the books I read in a given year; however, I can take a good guess by looking at which ones are sitting flat on my bookshelves rather than put away.

This year the book I enjoyed most was System Collapse by @marthawells

It’s part of the Murderbot Diaries, but warning to potential new readers, don’t jump on here. SC is a direct sequel to Network Effect.

Start at the beginning with All Systems Red.
