Finally finishing the #musiclist of 2023.
Very rewarding and irritating, realizing all the #music you've listened to aND YOU STILL HAVEN'T HEARD ALL OF THE #MUSICS YET
So it's a new year with a new #JMusicFriday and as I forgot to make a post last week with a theme fitting for the ending of the year 2023, i will do that now and wanna know your #BestOf2023
here are some of my favorites:
Looking back at 2023, the article I'm most proud of writing is my profile of Austin #drag queens. While this wasn't my article with the biggest impact this year, or one that's garnered any award nominations, it meant so much to me that the @TexasObserver supported the almost six months I spent getting to know members of this community and learning their stories. https://www.texasobserver.org/austin-drag-queens-defy-ban?utm_campaign=mastodon
I also guided the @TexasObserver coverage of #SXSW in 2023, looking for interesting, unusual, and underappreciated aspects of that overcommercialized festival. We produced 9 great articles from the event (not counting my drag queen story which got its start there!) https://www.texasobserver.org/tag/sxsw/
Here’s my #BestOf2023 list. It’s subjective, I’m not particularly stringent about criteria, and there’s not rhyme nor reason to my choice of categories.
There are four (unless I add more as the day wears on) categories, each will get its own toot.
Clarification: this is best tech I purchased in 2023.
Winner: the Toto Washlet SW3084 toilet seat. The tech has come along way since our last washlet we bought a decade ago. The carbon odor filtration is especially welcome in an old home without bathroom extraction fans.
Runner up: 15” M2 MacBook Air. Yes, my MBA came in second to a toilet seat.
They have a commonality: both surfaces achieve almost absolute zero with their power off.
As 2023 is coming to an end shortly, I'm going to go through and just randomly list off some favorites from the past year.
High speed. Minimal thoughts.
First - favorite new manga of 2023? Beat and Motion, Two on Ice, and Shojo Null. The first's about music; the second's about figure skaters; the last is set in a world of disposable cyborgs that are actuality sentient people with machines on them removing all sense of consciousness - with a sentient cyborg lead, a co-lead whose parent's were murdered for learning this truth, & good social commentary on cops.
2023 was big for me on the Fediverse. I got active on Pixelfed with @mdmrn. I started a new Sharkey (originally Firefish) account @mdmrn.
I had a KBin account, but that disappeared almost as soon as I had it when NerdBin disappeared. Then again I was never much of a Reddit guy...so Fediverse Reddit was never going to be my thing.
