HFS Plus first shipped in Mac OS 8.1 in 1998 (I helped design it and integrate it into the system). We started working on HFS Plus right after shipping 7.5.5 in the fall of 1996 and shipped it in less than a year and a half. HFS Plus supported larger volumes than any available hardware we could get at the time (a 10GB HDD), so we took a RAM disk driver I wrote and modified it so it looked like it was MUCH larger than it actually was and marked the fake space in the middle as bad blocks (when formatted) so we could test reads and writes at the end of the “disk.”
After shipping 9.2.2, I was moved to the Mac OS X file systems team. The computer I brought with me was an iMac G4 with the 20” screen. I rewrote the iDisk client (webdavfs) on that iMac G4. It was a great system. 😄
