I applaud this. What you describe is how it was when I began (first with electronics, then a computer kit, digital design job and then software), and I've continued in that vein throughout my career and hobbies.
Nobody knew, including me, that my interests were creating a rewarding career.
Unfortunately I think it's harder to do that these days.
