Is it too much to add a "Get Premium" button to the frontpage of Runestone for users who have not yet purchased Premium? I am considering adding it only on the iPad and Apple Vision Pro, where there is more space for the button.

Screenshot of Runestone on the Apple Vision Pro showing the “Get Premium” button.

@simonbs Why not in the sidebar?

@NateBarham I'm using Apple's UIDocumentBrowserViewController to display files, folders, and the sidebar. To my knowledge it does not support customization of the sidebar.

smartgo,

@simonbs In the free version of SmartGo One, I’m adding a view with a button at the bottom of the list of games to remind people to upgrade to Pro. Your button looks fine, not obtrusive at all; if you wanted to make it smaller, remove the ‘Get’?

jaylyerly,

@simonbs I think the idea of a button is perfectly fine. Apple’s lack of customization points for UIDocumentBrowserViewController is super frustrating though. Add to that the paradigm where UDBVC is supposed to be the initial VC and this is really your only option, I think. And the final hiccup, for me, UDBVC never seems to align a custom button quite right so it always seems a little off.

caleb,

@simonbs I just grabbed the TestFlight and was confused about where to find the app settings on this page. Usually one of the first things I go to check out but it seems to be missing until you open a file.

@caleb Thanks for the feedback. You should find the settings behind this button though.

simonnickel,

@simonbs how I usually like these: a box in the sidebar or on the main screen for iPhone, with a close/hide button.

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@simonnickel Yeah, unfortunately I don’t have much flexibility because I’m using UIDocumentBrowserViewController and it provides very few customization points.

simonnickel,

@simonbs could be in the sidebar. Maybe even be at the bottom as some kind of toolbar / overlay.

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@simonnickel As far as I know, I can’t add anything to the sidebar. Adding it as an overlay to the bottom would mean that I’d need to adjust the scroll insets of the scroll view containing the folders. I can’t do that either.

@simonbs Feels a bit crunched, especially when localized.

@simonbs I use a few apps that have occasional nag screens and I find that I am more likely to purchase the more insistent ones

If it’s too subtle I forget that it’s there. I like being reminded to show support when I’m using something for free

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@simsaens Indeed. Runestone has a nag screen too 😊

atnbueno,

@simonbs It’s not, but maybe not exactly there, between common controls

bardi,
@bardi@mas.to avatar

@simonbs you really should but I think it makes more sense in the bottom left as a fixed UI element. Feels too much a button connected to what’s selected right now, as opposed to associated to app universally.

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@bardi I agree that it is an awkward location, but I don't have many options because this UI is mostly provided by Apple, and it provides developers with few customization options.

@simonbs nope

valv0,

@simonbs that’s fine, imho.

trevorkay,

@simonbs At least on the iPad version I’m not sure it looks like a button there

Not quite used to custom buttons being there

_holger,
@_holger@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs there is a lot of space in the iOS Version, no?

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@_holger It would fit perfectly on that screen, but as soon as you navigate to a folder, there is significantly less space and unfortunately, adding a button will add it to all screens for browsing folders.

_holger,
@_holger@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs alternatively I would put it underneath the tabs. I‘m putting player controls at the bottom of my new podcasting app, that could be a solution.

@simonbs seems small and tasteful.
