They should make more hardware with metal toggle switches because this is so satisfying.

Me switching the toggle switch on an espresso machine.

@simonbs When the Mini Coopers came back in 2002, the had a row of toggles like that for locks, windows, etc. they were fantastic!

Getting obsessed with brewing coffee once again reminds me of a podcast series I’ve been wanting to do for a couple of years. I want to invite developers from the Swift community on the podcast to talk about one of their hobbies. Talking about code isn’t allowed.

jaylyerly,
@jaylyerly@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs That's how the ATP podcast started, right? They tried to do a podcast about cars, but the couldn't not talk about tech.

Weird that Delta appeared to be omitted from App Store search. I get get there via direct URL only. Any ideas, @rileytestut?

jaylyerly,
@jaylyerly@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell App Store search is really slow to surface new apps. Every time we publish an app, it takes days before it starts to show up in searches. And once it starts to appear, it still is way down on the results even in a search on the specific unique name. Give it a week or so and an it'll probably be the top hit.

jaylyerly,
@jaylyerly@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Yeah, it's weird. But its always worked like that. I assume it’s related to how the indexing of metadata, etc works for the App Store. In 99% of cases, it’s fine that it takes days for a new app to be properly indexed. Usually it's just us app developers (or our clients) searching for the brand new app. But every once in a while, lightning strikes, like with Delta, and everyone sees the weirdness.

There is zero benefit to using the OSLog APIs in your own app. The logs are hard to get in your own app, and impossible to get from previous app runs. You can't get logs from a device except via a sysdiagnose, and no developer wants to walk a customer through that arduous, privacy-invasive process.

OSLog is an API that Apple made to solve Apple's problems. It is not a developer-friendly API.

Use the Logging package instead: https://github.com/apple/swift-log

@krzyzanowskim I used Puppy as a backend on a couple of projects and it worked pretty well. It can log to rotating files that were nice to submit with bug reports.

Another slice of weirdness on Somona. When I’m in Mail, it often visually ‘replaces’ a previous paragraph with the current one I’m writing, so it looks like there are two that are the same. The text itself hasn’t changed behind the scenes – just how it’s shown on screen. If I save to draft and re-open the email, it looks as it should.

I’ve seen this occasionally in some other apps as well, so presumably something weird is happening with the standard macOS text view on my computer. Handy.

jaylyerly,
@jaylyerly@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Are you up to date on macOS? One of the recent minor releases fixed a bug that sounds awfully similar.

The biggest problem I have with chargers like this (I have one) is that any stand who’s magnet is strong enough to hold the iPhone firmly, usually is not heavy enough to remove said phone from the charger without first using two hands to hold it down. Try taking your phone off its charging stand on your nightstand while you’re still half asleep and you’ll run into all kinds of trouble.

jaylyerly,
@jaylyerly@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm I've got one of these super cheap aluminum stands that you add an Apple MagSafe puck to. The Apple puck has just the right magnetic strength to hold the phone in place, but pop off if you give it a little twist. Works great, even half asleep.

Watched the first ep of cause everyone seems to be talking about it. Was pretty fun but I’m kinda lost. Never watched this show back in the day. I know some of the characters but that’s about it. Some of the art direction is pretty impressive.

jaylyerly,
@jaylyerly@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm Oh please no. It’s be awesome for like one episode. Maybe a movie. But if you want actual good stories just bring back Young Justice! Which was (I kid you not) cancelled because too many girls were watching it. It was supposed to be a boy demographic for advertising purposes. https://www.ign.com/articles/2013/12/16/paul-dini-on-cartoon-networks-programming-decisions-and-why-boy-viewers-are-valued-over-girls

The design refresh of tvOS' TV app strikes me as one of the most successful design refreshes I can recall. Every change seems so intuitive and delightful, and no muscle memory has been ruined. That's not to say that other design refreshes are bad. It's just that this one seems particularly well done to me.

jaylyerly,
@jaylyerly@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I have to disagree. In the TV app's main screen, scrolling to the left now brings up the menu of channels, etc. where it didn't do anything before. So as I swipe back to the beginning of my Up Next list, I inadvertently open this menu. Multiple times a day. I find it quite infuriating.

Just played the Mario vs Donkey Kong demo on the Switch with the child. She loved it. I checked the pre-order price. 50 quid. I head online. 40 quid if you buy the physical release. Most places are selling it for 35. Yeah. I think I’ll stick with cartridges, thanks.

jaylyerly,
@jaylyerly@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Ugh, I hate juggling cartridges. I swore off physical media when I got the Switch, but I also hate paying the convenience tax on the electronic copies (that cost them less to distribute!). But this is the hill I'm going to die on. No more cartridges.

@craiggrannell I recently discovered Nintendo’s game vouchers. If have a Switch Online member, you can buy two digital game vouchers for $100. I redeemed mine for Super Mario Wonder ($60) and Zelda TOTK ($70), so that was a nice discount.

Is it too much to add a "Get Premium" button to the frontpage of Runestone for users who have not yet purchased Premium? I am considering adding it only on the iPad and Apple Vision Pro, where there is more space for the button.

Screenshot of Runestone on the Apple Vision Pro showing the “Get Premium” button.

jaylyerly,
@jaylyerly@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I think the idea of a button is perfectly fine. Apple’s lack of customization points for UIDocumentBrowserViewController is super frustrating though. Add to that the paradigm where UDBVC is supposed to be the initial VC and this is really your only option, I think. And the final hiccup, for me, UDBVC never seems to align a custom button quite right so it always seems a little off.

Is there a way for a Swift Package plugin to call a third-party command-line tool? Specifically, I'd like to call the 1Password command-line tool.

jaylyerly,
@jaylyerly@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs @Doozmen I wonder how op communicates with the app. If it uses a named pipe, maybe granting op full disk access might help. Interested to see what the 1password folks say.

jaylyerly,

Anyone have any good wireless or wired earbud recommendations? I'm not talking high-end here. We need to be able to afford 3 of them because they'd be for the kids. We're a heavily Apple household, but there's no way we can afford AirPods x 3 so it has to be something cheaper but also something that doesn't totally suck and would hopefully last awhile.

jaylyerly,
@jaylyerly@mastodon.social avatar

@bigzaphod Since you're an Apple household, I'd look at Beats Flex. They go for about $50 a pop and they have Apple's W1 chip so they get the magic “pair with all your iCloud devices” thing.

With all the posts about I decided to take the plunge. Started by re-watching the original movie starring James Spader & Kurt Russell. I had forgotten a lot of it. The last 1/3 of the flick is forgettable but the entire world building/discovery is compelling.

The pilot of SG-1 picks up a year after the events of the film & so far I like it. Richard Dean Anderson as Russell’s character is interesting. He’s now the alpha male instead of the nerd (Macgyver), interesting role reversal
