By the way, I deleted my Twitter account last week. Some years ago Twitter was an important component of my life. I always thought I'd go out with guns blazing. But I had basically been shadow banned into oblivion, and the whole place is just such a steaming mess. I said goodbye to a couple of friends and just quietly turned out the lights.

@mike Been a little over a year since I last logged in. I never missed it, and it apparently did not miss me. Can't actually delete my account as Elon now requires a paid account for MFA, so I can't log back in as I had MFA enabled, and I sure as hell not paying a penny to Elon for the privilege of quitting.

@mike Still hanging on to mine, though I only log in when I get an alert.

Most distressing thing for me, ‘cause I’ll usually wind up scrolling a bit, is how much the same it is. I had a tight, curated list and they all seem to be there posting their stuff like it’s 2015.

@BramMeehan I saw a lot of the same people posting a lot of the same stuff but for some reason it had far less value to me. Leaving it behind didn't seem like a loss.

@mike I haven't been to the bird s*** site in a while, and I have no real desire to check it out. I miss somethings that are there, but I've been able to live without them. I haven't deleted or disabled my account, more because I can't be bothered. Congrats on taking the leap, I should probably follow your lead.

@mike

I was determined to get mine suspended. It eventually took tweeting "Death to all fascists" to get me perma-banned. They didn't even like my appeal that this went against Elon's policy of free speech.

mike,
@mike@thecanadian.social avatar

@angiebaby I had this thought as well and heavily evangalized Mastodon for a while. It just got me shadow banned.

@mike If I may ask, what did you do to get shadow-banned? On Mastodon your account doesn't seem particularly edgy, trollish, or otherwise troublesome.

mike,
@mike@thecanadian.social avatar

@mpjgregoire I tried to evangelize Mastodon.

@mike
I quit posting the day he let trump back on. I keep my account open so I can dm with friends. I wish I could convince them to come here...

@dsmdexter @mike

Same. I have not posted on Xitter for a year or two but look in once in a while to see what some of the folks I used to connect with are up to. But there is no desire or interest in hanging out.

When I pull the plug I think I will deactivate the account rather than delete it. I have read of user handles being taken up by someone/something else after deleting and would rather keep it out of the picture.

mike,
@mike@thecanadian.social avatar

@graand @dsmdexter The username thing was one of the primary reasons I stayed. Then I realized if someone else took my username and used it in the Twitterverse, for whatever purpose, I could honestly care less.

graand,
@graand@thecanadian.social avatar

@mike @dsmdexter I’m afraid I suffer from a greater degree of paranoia. Deactivating may not accomplish anything other than an internal feeling of (somewhat false) security. It also carries the risk of ‘falling off the wagon’ and reconnecting for some (poor) reason but that’s fully in my ‘control’.

I’ve done the same thing with FB, deactivate the account. But then I lose Messenger which I do use occasionally to connect with some family and friends, so I keep coming back…

@mike Congrats!

@bowreality Honestly, I had basically given up on it even before Mastodon, but I kept an account for hockey news and a few friends. Even that basic use case became untenable.

@mike I found it really hard to step away from years and years on Twitter. I had to close my account immediately when Musk took over in 2022 otherwise I would have stayed.
