I launched my first website on 12/31/95, and it's still online and regularly updated. So I'm an old :)

By day, I am a Solutions Architect for Drupal websites and CIAM solutions. When not working, I prefer to be in the woods in my standup teardrop camper or at the beach. #Hiking, #SaintsFC, #Baseball, #Birding, #Purdue, #Camping, #Music, #rva, #RVLife #RedSox

So I've just been doing some tidying in the garage and I found this old #Compaq #Netbook. I've put it on charge, but do we think it will boot, and what OS do we think it's running?

chrisod,

@kev Wife: Hey Kev, the garage doesn't look any different.

Kev: I had to spend 6 hours deciding if a laptop was worth keeping...

Been there...done that :)

What are some dirt cheap, barebones Linux (or BSD) based server options? Mostly for web hosting etc.

I've used lowendstock and serverhunter, but those sites are not very dependable.

Any suggestions would be great!

Good morning and happy Tuesday

Let's all talk about what we did over the weekend as well as yesterday for those that had an extra day off due to the holiday.

For me, it's back to work day. I had 200+ emails to catch up on and I have 3 meetings that start at 11am EST.

I work today and tomorrow, then I'm off for a week for vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC!

When I was 18 and going to University, I applied for student aid because my parents weren't rich enough to help out. I was denied because I had outstanding debt. From when I was 16 months old. It took a while to get that sorted.

Look. I have kids. Quite a few of them. I love them, and I think they're downright adorable. Regardless, you won't ever see them until they're adults. I talk to them about privacy, and the risks of online life. I think it's important.

chrisod,

@adamsdesk @mike Somewhere on LinkedIn an influencer wrote 2000 words on what potty training their special needs child taught them about b2b sales.

I'm not searching to confirm my hypothesis, because it'll be too depressing when I find that post.

Greg Abbott just pardoned a man who posed he was going to kill Black Lives Matter protesters and claim self-defense, then killed a BLM protester and claimed self-defense but was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

North Carolina Republicans are advancing a bill to ban masks in public, even for those with legitimate health reasons and concerns to wear them.

@augieray You'd think that at some point Darwin kicks in and the number of Republicans starts to decline significantly.

A brief work of futuristic business fiction:

It's the year 2050, and the board of Acme Corp is meeting to review annual results. Years prior, the board okayed a radical proposal: Fire all employees and use AI to develop products, execute production, and service customers. “The benefits of essentially cost-free operations directed with pinpoint precision, nanosecond speed, and data-driven logic will yield the greatest profit margin in history,” promised the consultant's report. @augieray This reminds me of Optimal by J.M. Berger, a missing person mystery set in a dystopian future Boston where AI has optimized every single facet of life, including how many humans are living.

-->AI

"A few years back, a writer in a developing country started doing contract work for a company called AdVon Commerce, getting a few pennies per word to write online product reviews.

But the writer — who like other AdVon sources interviewed for this story spoke on condition of anonymity — recalls that the gig's responsibilities soon shifted. Instead of writing, they were now tasked with polishing drafts generated using an AI system the company was developing, internally dubbed MEL."

@ai6yr When I want a product review I go straight to Wirecutter, which has its issues, but AI-generated shit isn't one of them.

Whenever I pass by a Chik fil a in a progressive city with a gigantic line I think it’s kind of amazing a chicken sandwich can taste good enough that everyone’s cool with the homophobia they’re helping fund

chrisod,
@chrisod@fosstodon.org avatar

@mathowie I think at some point we all get tired of being expected to police {waves hands} everything. Sometimes you just want a chicken sandwich with waffle fries. I usually skip Chik-Fil-A because the lines are so long, and the McDonald's Crispy Chicken Sandwich is pretty damn good.

chrisod,
@chrisod@fosstodon.org avatar

@rickscully @mathowie My point is that skipping the chick-fil-a drive through doesn't actually move the needle against homophobia. Consumer boycotts vs. big companies rarely accomplish anything but create a few ad dollars for the news orgs that trumpet them for a couple of days. Individual consumers aren't going to fix systemic problems. They want us to think all these problems are on our shoulders - it leaves us too tired to do anything else to change the system.

It like recycling 1/2)

chrisod,
@chrisod@fosstodon.org avatar

@rickscully @mathowie

We will never, ever recycle our way out of our environmental problems. We have to stop pollution at the source. Which is why the Consumer Ad Council created the Crying Indian commercials 50 years ago. They were way ahead of us in redirecting out efforts from government regulation to individual action.

chrisod,
@chrisod@fosstodon.org avatar

@Sadsquatch @rickscully @mathowie I never said we should all load up on waffle fries - I said it's understandable that given everything all of us have to deal with (moreso for marginalized communities), it's understandable if people occasionally say fuck it and order the waffle fries. Voting for Ted Cruz and ordering the large waffle fries are both bad - but not equally bad - and trying to equate the two hurts more than helps the ultimate goal we all want.

After spending a few months borrowing DVDs from the library, amazed anyone deals with the constant, annoying, repetitive commercials on satellite/cable. On the negative side, my tolerance for inane ads on YouTube has dropped dramatically... I tend to turn stuff instead of power through some miracle-diet-nutrient-vitamin-clickbait cure something or other

chrisod,
@chrisod@fosstodon.org avatar

@hankg @ai6yr I do both. I get a lot of books from the library, but I also buy a lot of books (usually used if possible) and 98% of those go to a Little Free LIbrary once I'm done.

Work/Career Update!

As many of you know, I have worked for @novalauncher for 8 1/2 years. When I was hired, I was done so as a contractor and remained a contractor the entire time. Then two years ago, Branch Metrics acquired Nova and while I made the transition over, I was still a contractor due to Branch not having things setup to hire full time employees in the state of North Carolina. So for the entirety of my Nova Launcher career, I've been a contractor. (cont...)

Good morning and happy Saturday everyone here in the today.

It's the weekend, so let's talk about what our plans are for the next couple of days.

For me, it's just a weekend to rest and relax and enjoy the days. I'll be playing some Horizon Forbidden West as well as No Rest For The Wicked.

Other than that, not much else planned.
