It has happened. A grown ass adult Mac user told me they had no idea how to "make a folder". Damn. Phones ruined people.

@dosnostalgic its not phones ruining people. its that apple and microsoft have been putting in huge efforts to confuse and obfuscate the filesystem for end users even in their desktop operating systems. and many large third parties following along.

motivation seems to be to reduce user independence, and instead to build dependence on proprietary app stores and cloud services.

phones were merely a convenient first battleground in this war.

ntfbscott,

@dosnostalgic This is nothing new, it long predates phones. 20 years ago when people couldn't find a file they needed, I'd ask them "Where did you save it? Did you save it to My Documents? Did you save it to the desktop?" And they'd answer "I saved it in Word."

@ntfbscott 20 years ago it was middle aged people. Now it's young people.

@dosnostalgic People don't conceptualize filesystem hierarchies anyway. They memorize exactly where to click to do what they want. It can appear like competence to an observer until anything moves or changes.

@dosnostalgic There's much more to this... Many people are not even using computers other than smartphones. No surprise they have no idea what "folder" is.

And even if they have computers, they use them more like a bigger phone: concepts of files & folders is quite complex for them. It's very interesting...
