I'm beginning to think that some people who make ignorant comments about kolektiva and its users are doing so based purely on their subjective impression of the word "kolektiva".
@AdrianRiskin@RD4Anarchy The centralized blocklist people keep claiming that kolektiva, and other anarchist instances, are racist. When someone asks for evidence, they denounce the person as racist for asking for evidence.
It seems like there's another flare-up of this lately.
I enjoy being on Kolektiva, but I’ve started thinking about creating at least one backup/mirror account on another instance.
Not because there is anything wrong with Kolektiva, but because having so many of us on here together makes it easier for people to defederate from or block an explicitly anarchist instance and completely tune out anarchist voices.
Good! I like the idea of us having a shared space and online home. I also want to make sure that centralization doesn’t get used against us—I’ve seen too many people lately use our concentration on one server to auto-block all of us. I’d like to have both a home here and a work-around to continue reaching wider audiences.
Does that make sense? Kolektiva got a ton of shit over the FBI raid but that just make me like the admins more, not less. I don’t want to come across like I’m badmouthing this instance.
On the other hand, the people who block kolektiva are probably not going to be receptive anyway. If an instance decides to de-federate us that's different, but I was encouraged by many of the replies in that thread where that 🤡 Ohio Rob was all proud of blocking kolektiva. Even some who also didn't really like what we have to say, nevertheless didn't see reason to de-federate, and even came to kolektiva's defense in that regard (as well as pointing out that Rob was being ridiculous).
IMHO if someone doesn't want to listen to anarchist voices - and to be clear, I don't want to have the power to force anyone to listen to me - then blocking us all in one stroke is probably much easier.
Anyone who isn't happy to VBNMW is a Russian bot, obviously. Somebody told them that in 2016 and now everyone knows that's just how the universe works.
what RD4Anarchy said is pretty much it. it's the fear of communism created during the cold war, indoctrinated in western liberals by both USSR and western nations' ruling class and media. there is just new stuff to scapegoat now.
it's not new at all. i've been encountering that kind of reaction since the 90s, and that's only because i was a teenager with an internet connection, not because it was new, and i did it myself for a long time before i decided to think about and find out what the words mean.
The important thing in that thread wasn't that random liberals really disagreed with Ohio Rob, it was that kolektiva is apparently a large server by Mastodon standards. I'm a firm believer in "Liberals hate socialists more than they hate fascists" and the only real deterrence is that they'd be cutting off a lot of people.
I came here cause I heard about it from the IGD podcast and thought it would be nice to get somewhere that's not filled with the brunch crowd. Nice to find it strong!
